Apple Extends Noise Cancellation Across the AirPods 5 Line

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) fitted active noise cancellation to both versions of the AirPods 5, a change from the previous generation in which the feature was reserved for the higher specification model.

Apple says the AirPods 5 deliver 50% more noise reduction than the AirPods 4, attributing the gain to redesigned internals and a next generation Adaptive EQ that adjusts frequency response to the shape of the wearer's ear. The company describes the result as the best noise cancellation in the industry for open ear earbuds.

Battery life is rated at five hours of listening with noise cancellation active, and up to 20 hours in total with the charging case.

The line splits at $129 and $149. The higher priced version adds a wireless charging case and on stem volume control, and carries roughly an extra hour of listening time. The entry model omits both features.

Pre orders opened on 9 September alongside the rest of Apple's autumn hardware, with retail availability from 18 September. Both models are also listed through Amazon and other authorised resellers.

The AirPods 5 support Live Translation and hands free access to Siri. Paired with an iPhone running iOS 27 that supports Apple Intelligence, they allow users to respond to Siri AI through head gestures, nodding or shaking the head rather than speaking.

Apple announced the AirPods 5 at its Surprise and Shine event in Cupertino, California.
