Apple Links AirPods 5 to Siri AI With Head Gesture Control

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) built its rebuilt assistant into the AirPods 5, allowing users to respond to Siri AI with head movement rather than speech.

When the earbuds are paired with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence and runs iOS 27, users can answer Siri AI prompts by nodding or shaking the head. The AirPods 5 also provide hands free access to the assistant and support Live Translation.

The integration illustrates how Apple is positioning accessories as extensions of its artificial intelligence layer rather than as standalone audio products. It also narrows the practical benefit to a subset of buyers, since Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, a waitlist signup, and a supported language. The assistant launched in English only, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish expected in October.

Users in the European Union cannot access Siri AI on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch at all, following Apple's unresolved dispute with the European Commission over the Digital Markets Act, which removes the head gesture feature from that market as a practical matter.

Both AirPods 5 models carry active noise cancellation, which Apple says delivers 50% more noise reduction than the AirPods 4. Battery life is rated at five hours with noise cancellation enabled and up to 20 hours with the case.

Pricing is $129, or $149 for the version with a wireless charging case and on stem volume control. Availability began 18 September.
