Apple Introduces C2 Modem in iPhone Duo, Deepening Break From Qualcomm

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) unveiled the C2, its second generation in house cellular modem, at its 9 September event, extending a multi year effort to reduce dependence on Qualcomm Inc.

The chip powers connectivity in the foldable iPhone Duo. Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, said in the keynote that the C2 is 50% faster than the company's previous modem and operates at 15% lower energy.

Srouji framed the advantage as coming from integration rather than raw throughput alone. He said the fully integrated approach optimises the modem for everyday use, including the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to improve cellular reliability and to reconnect faster in areas of weak coverage.

The segment drew a standing ovation from the audience lasting at least 30 seconds, according to CNBC's live coverage of the event.

The C2 follows Apple's first in house modem and represents continued displacement of Qualcomm, long the dominant supplier of cellular modems to the smartphone industry and historically Apple's principal source for the component. Apple has not stated how quickly the C2 or its successors will spread across the wider iPhone range.

The modem was one of several silicon announcements at the event. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max carry the A20 Pro processor, described in event coverage as the first 2nm class chip shipped in a smartphone.

Apple did not disclose modem unit economics or the terms of its remaining commercial relationship with Qualcomm at the event.
