Apple Ties Some Apple Intelligence Features to Paid iCloud+ Tiers

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has begun linking parts of its generative artificial intelligence feature set to paid storage subscriptions, a departure from its earlier positioning of Apple Intelligence as a free capability of the operating system.

Server dependent features in iOS 27, including Siri AI, image generation and AI assisted image editing, carry daily usage limits. Apple has not published the specific caps for any tier. The company has said expanded allowances will be available to iCloud+ subscribers, with its own wording referring to most plans, which reporting has read as excluding the entry level tier.

Apple Intelligence powered camera features in the Home app carry a firmer requirement. Those features need an iCloud+ plan of at least 2TB, a condition first reported in July during the beta period.

The base version of Siri AI remains free on supported hardware. Apple has said there are no fees for Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features at present, while indicating it may charge for higher usage in future.

The structure matters for Apple's services segment, which carries materially higher margins than hardware and which the company has leaned on for growth as unit sales have flattened. Tying AI capacity to iCloud+ gives Apple a route to monetise generative features without introducing a separate subscription.

Image generation in iOS 27 runs on a private cloud model. Apple has said SynthID, a provenance marker for edited images, will arrive in a software update later this year and will be applied to most edited images depending on the edits used.
