Intel (INTC) Government Stake Now Worth About $42 Billion

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) has delivered the US government one of the better returns in recent public policy, with the federal stake taken in August 2025 now worth roughly four and a half times what was paid for it.

The government acquired 433.3 million Intel shares for $8.9 billion, a price of $20.47 per share, for a stake of close to 10%. With INTC trading around $97, that holding is worth approximately $42 billion on paper.

The arrangement was unusual when it was made. Direct federal equity ownership in a large listed company had not been seen in decades, and the deal followed a period in which Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan had come under political pressure over his prior business connections.

The stake sits alongside other capital that arrived in the same window. SoftBank invested $2 billion in mid-August 2025, and Nvidia followed in September with $5 billion.

The policy question the position raises has not gone away. Commentary published this week argued that government stakes in private companies produce a less dynamic economy over the long term, regardless of how the individual investment performs.

For Intel, the relevant point is what the capital funded. Intel raised 2026 capital expenditure guidance above $20 billion, is carrying Fab 52 in Chandler, Arizona, and continues process development on Intel 18A and 14A. Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner told investors the company would not need much more capital until it saw significant demand for 14A.
