Seven hundred and fifty gigabytes is an odd number by modern standards. Capacities today step through familiar figures β€” 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB β€” and 750GB fits none of them. It exists because of where platter density happened to be when this drive was made.

The IBM 42C0498 is a 750GB SATA 3Gb/s 7200RPM 3.5-inch hot-swap drive for System x servers, and it comes from a period when server storage was changing in an interesting way.

When SATA arrived in enterprise servers

For years, server storage meant SCSI and later SAS. SATA was the desktop interface, and putting it in a server was not something serious people did.

That changed when organisations realised that a large share of what they were storing did not need enterprise performance at all. Backups, archives, file shares, departmental data β€” all sequential, all tolerant of higher latency, all expensive to keep on 15K SCSI drives.

Enterprise SATA answered that. The drives used the cheaper interface and 7200 RPM mechanisms, but with enterprise firmware behaviour, higher workload ratings and rotational vibration compensation for multi-drive chassis. The result was capacity storage at a fraction of the cost per gigabyte, in the same server.

That distinction still matters today. The interface does not make a drive enterprise or desktop β€” the firmware behaviour, workload rating and vibration handling do. A drive with an IBM part number and a hot-swap carrier is an enterprise drive that happens to use SATA.

Why replacing like for like is the only sensible option

The temptation with an odd capacity is to replace it with something round and larger. In an array that does not work the way people expect.

A RAID group uses the smallest member capacity across every drive. Fit a 2TB drive into a group of 750GB members and the array uses 750GB of it. The remaining capacity is stranded β€” not available, not usable, not refundable.

Expanding the group properly means replacing every member and rebuilding, one drive at a time, with a full rebuild between each. On an older array that is a long process during which the array is repeatedly degraded, and the extra capacity only appears after the last drive is done.

For a system that works, like-for-like replacement is faster, cheaper and lower risk. That is why odd legacy capacities are worth stocking, and why we do.

SATA 3Gb/s in practice

The first-generation SATA interface, and it is not a constraint on a mechanical drive.

SATA is compatible in both directions: a 3Gb/s drive runs in a 6Gb/s backplane at 3Gb/s, and a 6Gb/s drive runs in a 3Gb/s backplane at 3Gb/s. Nothing breaks either way.

And a 7200 RPM platter cannot sustain data rates near 3Gb/s except in short bursts from cache. The spindle is the bottleneck long before the interface is, so the link generation makes no practical difference to throughput here.

One caveat worth knowing: some enterprise backplanes accept SAS only and will not recognise a SATA drive at all. Where a chassis is SAS-only, capacity storage means NL-SAS rather than SATA. Check the backplane requirement rather than assuming.

Keeping an older System x populated

IBM sold its x86 server business to Lenovo, and servers of this generation have had no straightforward parts channel for years. The machines are frequently still doing useful work β€” file serving, backup targets, departmental applications, test environments.

Three things worth doing if you maintain systems in this class.

Hold spares of each drive type. Odd legacy capacities are a shrinking pool, and a degraded array waiting on market availability is a worse position than one waiting on a shelf.

Record your part numbers now. Pull a drive, photograph the label, write it down. Ten minutes today saves an hour during an outage.

Verify your backups restore. On hardware this age, treat the array as availability rather than protection. Drives installed together age together, and second failures during rebuild are not unusual.

Common questions

Is a SATA drive in a server an enterprise drive?

It can be. The interface does not determine the class β€” firmware behaviour, workload rating and rotational vibration compensation do. A drive with an IBM part number and hot-swap carrier is an enterprise drive that happens to use SATA.
