Zebra ZD620 vs ZD621: Reading the Part Number
Put a Zebra ZD620 and a Zebra ZD621 side by side and almost nobody can tell you which is which, or what either one actually does. Same footprint, same lid, same media path, same badge in the same place. Two units that look identical can differ by print method, by printhead resolution, by maximum label width and by whether there is a radio inside. None of that is printed on the outside of the machine. It is carried entirely in the part number.
That is why buyers get this family wrong. Someone orders a replacement for a printer that died, matches the model name on the front, and receives a unit that cannot run the ribbon their labels need or cannot join the warehouse Wi-Fi. The model name was never the specification. The part number is.
This guide does one thing: it teaches you to read a ZD620 or ZD621 part number and know what you are getting before it ships. Everything below is derived from the part numbers and specifications we actually hold, roughly two dozen configurations across the two families. Where our records prove a pattern we say so. Where they only suggest one we say that instead, because a decoder that quietly guesses is worse than no decoder at all.
One badge, two dozen part numbers
The ZD620 and ZD621 are 4-inch class desktop label printers, with a narrower 2-inch class variant in the same body. In our catalogue alone there are units at 203 dpi and at 300 dpi, in direct thermal and thermal transfer, in 4-inch and 2-inch widths, with wired interfaces only and with wireless added, and in standard and healthcare configurations. That is a great deal of variation behind one product name, and three things make it worse than ordinary configuration sprawl.
The differences are invisible from outside. A 203 dpi head and a 300 dpi head look the same with the lid shut, and direct thermal and thermal transfer units share a chassis, so you cannot audit a fleet by eye.
The differences are not field-changeable. Media you can change on a Tuesday. Resolution, print method and radio are fixed when the part number is chosen.
The part numbers are near-identical strings. ZD6A042-301F00EZ and ZD6A042-D01F00EZ differ by one character, and that character is the difference between a printer that takes ribbon and one that does not.

How to read the part number, position by position
Take one real part number and walk it character by character. We will use ZD6A042-301F00EZ, which our records list as a ZD621t, 4 inch, 203 dpi, thermal transfer, USB / Ethernet / Serial, 5.5 lbs, refurbished. Split into blocks it reads ZD6A / 0 / 4 / 2 / hyphen / 3 / 0 / 1 / F / 00 / EZ.

Characters 1 to 4: ZD6A or ZD62. This is the cleanest signal in the string and the one most people miss, because it looks more like a model name than a code. Every ZD621 we hold begins ZD6A: ZD6A042-301F00EZ, ZD6A142-D01F00EZ, ZD6A043-321F00EZ, ZD6AH42-D01L01EZ and the rest. Every ZD620 begins ZD62: ZD62042-T01F00EZ, ZD62143-T01L01EZ, ZD62H42-D01F00EZ and so on. If you remember one rule from this guide, remember that an A in the fourth position means ZD621 and a 2 means ZD620. One record in our catalogue does not follow this, and we deal with it openly below rather than pretending it away.
Character 5: 0, 1 or H. The H is the useful value. It appears on ZD6AH42-D01L01EZ, ZD62H42-D01F00EZ and ZD62H42-D01L01EZ, which are exactly the three records catalogued as healthcare configurations. In our stock, H in the fifth position and a healthcare listing go together every time, with no exceptions in either direction.
The 0 and the 1 are where an honest decoder has to stop. We hold pairs differing only in this character that carry identical specifications: ZD6A042-301F00EZ and ZD6A142-301F00EZ are both ZD621t, 4 inch, 203 dpi, thermal transfer, USB / Ethernet / Serial, 5.5 lbs, and ZD62042-T01F00EZ and ZD62142-T01F00EZ are the ZD620 equivalent. Whatever that character tracks, our specification data does not capture it, and we are not going to invent a meaning. If you are matching an existing unit, quote the full part number including that character so the match is exact.
Character 6: print width. Every 4-inch record carries a 4 here. The single 2-inch record, ZD6A022-D11B01EZ, carries a 2 and is listed as a 2-inch ZD621d at 203 dpi. One record is a small sample, but it is consistent with every 4-inch part number we hold. Width is also the specification that makes a printer useless if it is wrong, because a 2-inch machine cannot print a 4-inch carrier label at any setting.
Character 7: resolution. A 2 appears on every 203 dpi record and a 3 on every 300 dpi record. Compare ZD62043-T01F00EZ at 300 dpi against ZD62042-T01F00EZ at 203 dpi: same family, same width, same print method, same interfaces, one character apart. All five of our 300 dpi records, ZD6A043-321F00EZ, ZD6A043-D01F00EZ, ZD62043-T01F00EZ, ZD62043-T11F00EZ and ZD62143-T01L01EZ, carry a 3. Every other record carries a 2 and is listed at 203 dpi.
Read characters 6 and 7 as a pair and they become the most useful two characters in the string: 42 is 4-inch 203 dpi, 43 is 4-inch 300 dpi, 22 is 2-inch 203 dpi.
First character after the hyphen: print method. This decides whether the printer can run a ribbon, and it behaves differently in the two families, which is exactly the sort of detail that catches people out. In both families, D goes with direct thermal: thirteen records in our stock are catalogued as direct thermal and every one carries a D there. Thermal transfer is where they diverge. In our ZD620 records it carries a T: ZD62042-T01F00EZ, ZD62142-T01F00EZ, ZD62043-T01F00EZ, ZD62043-T11F00EZ, ZD62143-T01L01EZ. In our ZD621 records it carries a 3: ZD6A042-301F00EZ, ZD6A142-301F00EZ, ZD6A043-321F00EZ.
The practical reading is that D means no ribbon and T or 3 means ribbon. If you are filtering a spreadsheet for thermal transfer units, search for both T and 3, not just T.
The two characters after the print method letter. These vary without any specification difference we can point to. ZD62042-D11F00EZ, ZD62042-D21F00EZ and ZD62042-D01F00EZ are listed identically as ZD620d, 4 inch, 203 dpi, direct thermal, USB / Ethernet / Serial, 3.6 lbs. ZD62043-T01F00EZ and ZD62043-T11F00EZ are likewise identical to each other in our records. These digits are almost certainly doing real work in Zebra's own configuration scheme, but our records do not demonstrate what, and we will not guess. The only firm observation is that the second of the two is a 1 on every part number we hold, so there is nothing to decode from it here.
The communications block letter. This is where the radio shows up. Every part number we hold with an F here is listed with wired interfaces only, meaning USB, Ethernet and Serial. That is fifteen records spanning both families, both resolutions, both print methods and the healthcare configuration, with no exception. Every part number with an L whose connectivity we have recorded adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to those wired interfaces: ZD62143-T01L01EZ, ZD62142-D01L00EZ, ZD6AH42-D01L01EZ and ZD62H42-D01L01EZ.
Two records need care. ZD62142-D01L0640 carries an L but our entry lists it only as a 4-inch 203 dpi direct thermal ZD620d at 3.6 lbs, with no interfaces recorded, so it is not evidence either way and should be confirmed before ordering. ZD6A022-D11B01EZ carries a B, unique in our stock, and also has no interfaces recorded. One record with a unique letter and no connectivity data is not a pattern and we will not build one from it.
The final four characters. Almost every part number we hold ends EZ, preceded by 00 or 01. Every F part number ends 00EZ; the L part numbers end 01EZ or 00EZ. The exception is ZD62142-D01L0640, the only part number in the family we hold that does not end in EZ. A trailing block like this typically carries region or kit information, and our data does not resolve which, so we leave it rather than assert what we cannot show.
The one record that does not fit
Honesty is more useful than a tidy decoder, so here is the exception in full. Our catalogue contains ZD62142-T01L01EZ, and its record reads: ZD621d, 2 inch, 203 dpi, direct thermal, USB / Ethernet / Serial / Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, 3.6 lbs, refurbished.
That is inconsistent with every other record we hold, on three separate counts. The ZD62 prefix goes with ZD620 everywhere else, not ZD621. The 4 in the sixth position goes with 4-inch units, not 2-inch. The T after the hyphen goes with thermal transfer, not direct thermal.
We are not going to invent an explanation for it, and we are not going to quietly correct it either, because either would leave you worse informed. Treat it as an internal data point that needs confirming against the physical unit before purchase. Direct thermal or thermal transfer, and the weight tell
This is the decision that matters most, because it cannot be revisited after delivery. Direct thermal uses heat to darken a coated label, so the label is the only consumable. Thermal transfer melts pigment from a ribbon onto the label, so you buy and load ribbon as well.
Direct thermal suits anything read within days or weeks: carrier and shipping labels, pick and pack labels, retail shelf labels, specimen labels. Thermal transfer suits anything that has to survive, such as asset tags, rack and bin location labels, and labels exposed to heat, sunlight, abrasion or solvents. Direct thermal output fades with heat and light as a matter of chemistry, and no darkness setting changes that.
Now the useful part, straight out of our own stock data. Every direct thermal unit in our ZD620 and ZD621 records weighs 3.6 lbs. Every thermal transfer unit weighs 5.5 lbs. That holds across both families, both resolutions, wired and wireless, standard and healthcare. It is not coincidence: a thermal transfer machine carries a ribbon supply spindle, a take-up spindle and the mechanism to drive them, and that hardware has mass.
The practical value is auditing. If you have a shelf of these printers and a spreadsheet you do not trust, a scale settles the question faster than opening every lid, and it is a sanity check on delivery: if you ordered thermal transfer and the box feels light, weigh it before commissioning it.
The corollary matters just as much. A direct thermal ZD620d or ZD621d cannot be made into a thermal transfer machine by buying ribbon, because there is nowhere to put it. A thermal transfer unit runs direct thermal media perfectly well by simply not loading a ribbon. If your labels might need durability later, that asymmetry is the whole argument for buying the T or 3 part number now.
203 dpi or 300 dpi, and the speed you trade
Our stock holds both resolutions in both families, and our records show the trade directly. The 203 dpi models run at up to 8 in/sec, which is 203 mm/s. The 300 dpi models run at up to 6 in/sec, which is 152 mm/s. Higher resolution costs roughly a quarter of your top speed, and at volume that is a real cost.
At 203 dpi the printhead has about eight heating elements per millimetre; at 300 dpi it has closer to twelve. The finer head matters in three situations and almost no others.
Small text. Below roughly six point, character strokes at 203 dpi fall between elements and letterforms break up. Ingredient panels, dosage text and dense part descriptions hold together at 300 dpi and do not at 203 dpi.
Small 2D barcodes. A Data Matrix or QR code is a grid of cells and the scanner needs every cell rendered consistently. On a small label at 203 dpi there are very few printer dots per cell, so rounding distorts the grid and read rates fall. At 300 dpi the code stays square. For 2D codes on labels under about 2 inches, resolution is the difference between scanning and not scanning.
Fine linear barcodes. A Code 128 at a narrow bar width around 5 mil sits at the edge of what 203 dpi holds to tolerance. At 300 dpi the same symbol gets more dots per bar and the width ratios stay inside spec.
What 300 dpi does not improve is a large shipping label with a big linear barcode and legible address text. That prints identically at either resolution and faster at 203 dpi. A finer head is also less forgiving of poor label stock, reproducing coating irregularity that a 203 dpi head averages over, so if quality drops after a move to 300 dpi, look at the media before the printer. Resist raising darkness to compensate: it shortens printhead life without fixing media, platen pressure or a dirty head.
Wireless, and why it is the hardest thing to change later
Most of the family in our stock is wired, carrying an F in the communications position. A smaller set adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and carries an L: ZD62143-T01L01EZ, ZD62142-D01L00EZ, ZD6AH42-D01L01EZ and ZD62H42-D01L01EZ.
Interfaces are the specification people assume they can sort out later, and in this family that assumption is expensive. A printhead is a service part and a platen roller is a service part, but a radio in a desktop chassis is a build-time configuration, not a job a bench technician does between tickets. If a printer is going on a cart, in a clinic or anywhere you cannot economically run a cable, you need the L part number from the outset.
Wired is genuinely better where you can use it. Ethernet gives the printer its own network address, so several workstations can queue to it and replacing the PC on the bench does not mean reinstalling a printer. It is also more stable than Wi-Fi among metal racking. Bluetooth is the underrated one: it pairs a handheld or tablet to a printer on a cart without involving the network team.
One install detail applies to every networked unit, wired or wireless. Give each printer a static address or a DHCP reservation and record it against the bench it serves. A printer whose address changes after a power cut stops receiving jobs silently and presents exactly like a hardware fault, and working printers have been replaced over it.
The healthcare part numbers
Three records carry an H in the fifth position: ZD6AH42-D01L01EZ, a ZD621d Healthcare at 4 inch, 203 dpi, direct thermal, USB / Serial / Ethernet / Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, 3.6 lbs; ZD62H42-D01F00EZ, a ZD620d Healthcare at 4 inch, 203 dpi, direct thermal, USB / Ethernet / Serial, 3.6 lbs; and ZD62H42-D01L01EZ, a ZD620d Healthcare with the wireless interface set, 3.6 lbs.
What the H tells you is this and only this: the part number identifies a healthcare configuration of the printer. That is the whole of what our data supports.
It does not tell you what the housing is made of, what cleaning agents the unit tolerates, what coatings or treatments it carries, whether it holds any certification, or what its regulatory status is. We make no claim on any of those points, and you should be sceptical of anyone who makes one from a part number alone. The rest reads normally. All three are 4-inch, 203 dpi, direct thermal units at 3.6 lbs, exactly what characters 6 and 7 and the D after the hyphen predict. Two carry an L for wireless, one carries an F. The H overrides nothing else in the string.

The language support is the quiet reason this family replaces older printers easily. ZPL II is what most warehouse, ERP and shipping systems emit, and EPL2 is the older language used by earlier Zebra desktop units, so label formats written for a previous generation generally run without being rewritten. Read that alongside the decoder and the logic becomes mechanical. Pick the family prefix, pick 42 or 43 or 22 for width and resolution, pick D or T or 3 for print method, pick F or L for interfaces, and you have described the machine without ever looking at a photograph.
Buying refurbished: what to check on arrival
Desktop thermal printers refurbish well, because there is little in them to fail mechanically and the parts that wear are well understood and replaceable. The printhead. The consumable that matters and the most expensive single part, more so on 300 dpi units because a finer head carries more elements in the same width. The failure signature is a thin white line running the full length of every label in the same place: burnt-out elements, not dirt, and cleaning will not recover them. Print a full-width solid block as your first test label so a bad head is found inside the warranty window rather than in week five.
The platen roller. The rubber roller under the head that drives media. Turn it by hand with the lid open and look for flat spots, hardening, glazing or adhesive build-up. A worn platen causes tracking drift, uneven darkness and skewed print, and is misdiagnosed as a printhead fault more often than anything else in thermal printing.
Firmware and configuration. A refurbished unit arrives carrying whatever the last owner left on it: a static address from another building's network, a stored label format, changed darkness or speed defaults, a non-default print language, saved Wi-Fi credentials. Print a configuration label as your second test, read it properly, then reset to a known baseline. Commissioning several units, save that baseline once and push it to every machine so a printer swap later really is a swap.
Media path and sensors. Run a media calibration before judging print quality. Gap and black mark sensors get left on the wrong setting, and a miscalibrated sensor produces blank labels, double feeding and creeping print, which look like every other fault in the book.
What is in the box, and the part number. Confirm the power supply, power cable, interface cable and media spindle are present, and check the interface cable matches the interface you ordered, which is a specific risk here because a unit can have USB, Ethernet and Serial all fitted. Then, if this unit replaces an existing one, compare the full part number on the old machine's label with the new one. That is the only comparison that means anything, because two printers both badged ZD620 can differ in every specification a user would notice.
The cutter module
