A mobile label printer gets judged on things that never appear on a spec sheet. Resolution, speed and connectivity are what buyers compare, and they rarely decide whether a fleet still works in eighteen months. That is decided by how the battery ages, how the media door survives a drop, how the charge connector holds up, and how many labels fit on a roll.
This guide covers two units we hold. The Honeywell RP2A, part RP2A0000B00, is a 2-inch mobile thermal label printer at 203 dpi and 1.2 lbs, supplied new, tagged for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. What a 2-inch mobile label printer is for
A 2-inch mobile printer prints a label roughly the width of a receipt, carried by the person printing it. That web will not hold a carrier shipping label or a pallet placard, so if that is your output you want a 4-inch desktop or industrial unit. Most labelling work is smaller: price tickets, shelf tags, bin locations, serial tags, delivery receipts.
The case for carrying the printer is arithmetic about walking. Every label produced at a fixed station costs a round trip: thirty seconds each way, forty times a shift, is forty minutes that produces nothing. Batching to avoid the walk creates the failure that actually hurts, with labels printed at a desk and carried into the aisle, where one gets applied to the wrong case. A belt-worn printer produces the label immediately after the scan that generated it, so it never exists in a state where it can be mismatched. The jobs where a belt-worn printer beats walking back to a desk
Route delivery. The driver is at the tailgate with no desk in reach. Delivery receipts, proof of delivery labels and return labels for refused items have to be produced where the goods are, or they become paper forms and a backlog.
Shelf and price labelling. Price changes arrive as a list and get executed aisle by aisle. Printing the batch at the back office works until the list is long, at which point the operator is holding a hundred small labels in a sequence that has to be kept perfectly. Printing in place removes that.
Field service. An engineer labels the new part, labels the removed part for return, and often prints a service record label. None of it waits for the van, because the removed part is already in a box with three others.

Pick confirmation and exceptions. Most picking needs no label until something goes wrong: a short pick, a substitution, a damaged case to segregate. Those arise at an unpredictable point in the aisle, and a belt-worn printer turns each into fifteen seconds of work.
Reading the RP2A and RP2F part numbers
Our two part numbers confirm less than buyers assume. RP2A0000B00 confirms an RP2A: 2-inch mobile thermal, 203 dpi, 1.2 lbs, new, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. RP2F00N1D10 confirms an RP2F: 2-inch mobile thermal, 1.5 lbs, refurbished, USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
What we will not do is publish a character-by-character decoder for the digits after the family name. Our records do not settle what each position in 0000B00 or 00N1D10 encodes, and a decoder written from inference is what makes somebody order the wrong configuration. The A and the F identify two members of the RP2 family, and our records differ in weight, in recorded connectivity and in whether a resolution is captured. Treat the rest as a configuration code to be confirmed, not interpreted.
Replacing a printer that already works? Order against its full part number, never the family name. Buying the family for the first time? Specify by behaviour: resolution, media width, roll diameter, radio type, charging arrangement and battery, then have the supplier confirm the part number delivers all six. Our records give the RP2A at 1.2 lbs and the RP2F at 1.5 lbs. About five ounces, which on paper looks like a gap nobody should care about. On a belt it is not.
A belt-worn printer hangs off one point on one hip, so the load is asymmetric and the body compensates by adjusting posture for eight hours while the operator bends, reaches and walks. Complaints from a rollout are almost never that the printer is heavy in the hand. They are hip and lower back fatigue by late shift, the unit catching on racking, and operators quietly putting it on a cart. Five ounces will not decide that alone; it moves the threshold. If operators are already at the edge of what they tolerate, the lighter unit stays on the belt and the heavier one comes off, which is the most common way a mobile printing project fails.
So weigh the unit as it will be carried, with media and battery fitted, and ask whether the recorded weight includes media. A belt clip concentrates load on one point, a shoulder strap spreads it but lets the unit swing, a harness is most comfortable and most resented at first fitting. Then run a wear trial on a real shift: five ounces only shows up after hour six.
What our records do not tell you, and the questions to ask instead
Our records do not state battery capacity, drop rating, ingress protection rating, print speed or command language for either printer, and they state 203 dpi for the RP2A but no resolution for the RP2F. We will not fill those gaps from general brand knowledge, because a figure you cannot trace is worse than an acknowledged gap. Here is why each matters.
Print resolution. The RP2A is recorded at 203 dpi; the RP2F record states none, and you should not assume they match. Resolution decides whether a small 2D code on a narrow label scans first time, and on a 2-inch web there is little room. Confirm it on the specific RP2F unit and ask for a printed sample to scan with your own scanners.
Battery capacity. Not recorded for either. Capacity decides whether one pack covers a shift or commits you to a mid-shift swap, and it interacts with print volume, radio activity and temperature. Ask for it, and for a label count per charge.
Drop rating. Not recorded for either. A drop specification states a tested height onto a stated surface, and belt-worn printers get dropped repeatedly onto concrete. Ask whether it covers the unit with the media door closed and latched, because that is where mobile printers fail.
Ingress protection rating. Not recorded for either. The IP rating covers dust and water, and it matters more here than on a desktop unit because the printer goes wherever the operator goes: chilled store, wet dock, dusty yard. Ask whether it applies with a case or without.
Print speed. Not recorded for either. It matters less here because you print one label at a time and the operator is the bottleneck, but it governs battery draw and waiting.
Command language. Not recorded for either, and this is the one that quietly wrecks projects. It is how your application talks to the printer, and if it does not match what your warehouse system or print server emits, somebody writes a translation layer. Confirm it against what your software actually sends.
Asking those six questions before a purchase order takes one email. Discovering any of them after a fleet lands takes a quarter.
What actually kills mobile printers
Desktop printers fail predictably: printhead wear, platen wear, little else. Mobile printers fail in a wider set of ways because they are carried, dropped, charged daily and used outdoors.
Battery ageing, not battery capacity
The most common mobile printer failure is not a failure at all. It is a pack aged to the point where it no longer covers a shift, reported as the printer dying in the afternoon. Lithium ion cells lose usable capacity with charge cycles and with time, and not linearly: a pack comfortably ahead of demand stays comfortable for a long period, then crosses a threshold and fails daily within weeks. That is predictable, because every pack was bought together and ages together.
So treat the battery as a consumable with a service life: know when each pack entered service and budget replacement as a recurring cost. The first diagnostic for a printer dying early is to swap in a known good pack and see whether the symptom moves; it almost always does. This is why capacity as a headline figure disappoints. It tells you what a new pack does, not what a two-year-old one does.
Drop damage to the media door and latch
Belt-worn printers get dropped, and what matters is where the damage lands. The chassis is usually fine. The part that breaks is the media door and its latch: the largest moving part, on an edge, under spring tension.
A cracked latch produces a printer that prints perfectly as long as somebody holds the door shut, so it stays in service in a degraded state, producing intermittent misfeeds blamed on label stock for weeks. Evaluate a protective case on whether it protects the door edge and latch, not the body. And check door closure first on any intermittent feed problem: a door that does not close under full tension changes the media path geometry.
Printhead contamination from dust and adhesive
Adhesive transfers from liner edges to the head and platen, producing print that goes patchy in bands and media that tracks slightly off. Dust, grit and fibre are pulled in through the media path, and that is worse on a mobile printer because the door is opened in the field.
The distinction at diagnosis is contamination against element failure. Contamination gives patchy print, inconsistent between labels, that changes when you clean. A failed element gives a thin white line down every label, in the same place, and no cleaning recovers it. Tie cleaning to media changes rather than the calendar.
Connector wear from daily charging
A printer charged from a cable has its connector mated and unmated at least once a working day, usually by a tired person at the end of a shift. Connectors are rated for a finite number of insertion cycles, and daily use consumes that budget quickly.
The failure is gradual: intermittent charge, then a connector that only works if the cable is held just so, then a printer that arrives at shift start flat. Because the symptom is a flat printer it gets diagnosed as a battery problem, and a good pack is replaced while the real fault continues. Where the hardware supports it, charge through contacts in a cradle instead: no insertion cycles, no angle problem.
Media roll capacity and the mid-shift reload
A mobile printer is small, so the media roll is small, and how many labels fit at your label length determines how often an operator stops work, finds media, opens the door and reloads. Do the arithmetic before you buy: labels per shift divided by labels per roll gives your reload count. Two or fewer fits your workflow; six will be resented, and creates six chances per shift for dust to get in.
Then decide where spare media lives, because a reload that needs a trip to the supply cupboard reintroduces the walking you bought the printer to eliminate.
Wireless: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and who owns the pairing
Our records tag the RP2A for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and record the RP2F with USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The question is not which radio is better but which architecture you are signing up to, because that decides your support burden for the life of the fleet.
Bluetooth pairs the printer to a person's device. The handheld the operator already carries holds the pairing, so the printer never exists on your network and needs no address, certificate or roaming design. The cost is that pairing is a relationship, and relationships break. An operator picks up a different handheld, or a handheld is replaced, and pairings have to be rebuilt. Those reach your service desk as "the printer is not working". Bluetooth succeeds on whether pairing is managed centrally and each operator is issued a fixed handheld and printer as a pair.
Wi-Fi connects the printer to your host system. The printer has an address, jobs come from a warehouse system or print server, and any authorised host can print to any printer. That fits when labels are generated centrally and printers must be interchangeable. The cost is credentials, certificates that expire across a fleet, and roaming. Roaming is the real issue in a large building: as the operator walks the floor the printer hands off between access points, and a slow handoff appears as a job that vanishes or arrives late at the wrong end of the aisle. A printer that roams badly is reported as broken by everyone who uses it, and the fault is in the wireless design. The active radio also draws power.
Raw throughput is almost never the deciding factor: both radios move a 2-inch label faster than an operator can apply it. If labels originate on the handheld and each operator has their own kit, take Bluetooth and take the simplicity. If they originate in a host system, or printers are shared across shifts, Wi-Fi earns its complexity, but only if somebody owns roaming and certificates first.
New against refurbished when there is a battery in the box
Our two units differ in condition. The RP2A is recorded as new, the RP2F as refurbished, and both carry the same 30-day Tech Seller USA warranty.
For most hardware refurbished is an easy decision: wear items are identifiable and inspectable, and a function tested unit with a warranty is a straightforward saving. Mobile printers complicate that, because there is a chemical component inside that ages whether or not the device was used. A new unit gives you a pack at the start of its life and a chassis, door and latch with no drop history. A refurbished unit has been through a working life, which for mechanical parts is often preferable because anything genuinely weak has already declared itself. Ask specifically about the battery: is the pack original, has it been replaced, and what is its condition.
So separate the battery from the printer. The printer is a durable asset with a life measured in years. The battery is a consumable measured in charge cycles, and it will be replaced at least once during the printer's life whatever condition the printer arrived in. Hold that distinction and you compare chassis, media door, latch, printhead and connectors, budgeting battery replacement separately in both cases.
Deploying a fleet rather than a single unit
Spare batteries and a ratio. Decide the spare pack ratio before you order, not after the first bad week. If one pack covers a shift with margin you need a modest pool for ageing and failures; if not, you need a pack per printer per shift plus spares, and somewhere to charge them. This is the most common reason a fleet underperforms.
Charging bays rather than cables. A multi-bay charger removes connector wear and turns charging into a place rather than a task. Site it where operators already end their shift, because a station nobody walks past is bypassed within a fortnight.
A swap pool, not a repair queue. Hold a few configured spares, swap a misbehaving unit and investigate away from the shift. A printer diagnosed on the floor is a printer stopping work.
Configuration consistency. Every printer should carry the same darkness, calibration, radio configuration and label formats. A fleet that drifts produces labels that scan reliably from most printers and marginally from a few, reported as an intermittent scanner problem. Asset tracking that includes the battery. Track printers by serial and packs separately with their in-service date, or you cannot tell an ageing pack from a failing printer.
Arrival checks and a short commissioning checklist
Do this on the bench before anything goes onto a belt.
Confirm the full part number on the label against your order, not the family name. This catches a mismatch while it is still returnable.
Check box contents: battery, charger or cable, belt clip or strap, and any cradle ordered. A mobile printer without its charging arrangement is not a working printer.
Open and close the media door under full tension. It should latch positively and hold without pressure. Looseness or a crack at the hinge is a unit to set aside now rather than a mystery feed fault later.
Charge fully, note the date and watch one representative shift. The date is your battery in-service date, recorded against the pack rather than the printer. Then print your actual volume with your actual radio configuration and see where the charge sits.
Print a test label and scan it with your own scanners, at the angle and distance the job involves. This also settles the RP2F resolution question directly.
Confirm the wireless path end to end. For Bluetooth, pair to the actual handheld model and confirm the pairing survives a restart. For Wi-Fi, confirm the printer authenticates, holds an address and prints from the real host system, then walk the route and watch for failures at the far end.

Why does a mobile printer start dying before the end of a shift?
Usually an aged battery rather than a faulty printer. Lithium ion packs lose usable capacity with charge cycles, and the loss crosses a threshold suddenly, so a fleet bought together starts failing together. The second common cause is a worn charge connector, which leaves the printer only partly charged overnight and gets misdiagnosed as a battery fault. Swap in a known good pack first.
