Seagate 9FT066-005 500GB Barracuda HDD: Desktop vs RAID Use
This one needs a clear warning at the top rather than buried three sections down. The Seagate 9FT066-005 is a 500GB SATA 3Gb/s 7200RPM Barracuda drive, and Barracuda without the ES suffix is Seagate’s desktop line.
That is not a criticism of the drive. It is a statement about where it belongs, and it rules out one very common use.
Why a desktop drive should not go in a RAID array
The reason is specific and mechanical rather than a matter of general quality, and it surprises people who assume the difference is marketing.
When a drive encounters a bad sector it retries the read. A desktop drive retries for a very long time, sometimes tens of seconds, because in a single-drive PC there is no other copy of your data — recovering that sector at any cost is exactly the right behaviour.
In a RAID array it is exactly the wrong behaviour. The controller has parity and can reconstruct the sector instantly from the other members. What it needs is a fast error report. When the drive instead goes silent for thirty seconds, the controller concludes it has died and ejects it from the array.
The result is an array that keeps dropping healthy drives, which presents as a mysterious hardware fault and is actually a firmware behaviour mismatch. Enterprise drives use time-limited error recovery specifically to prevent it.
There are two further differences. Desktop drives lack rotational vibration compensation, so several in one enclosure degrade each other’s throughput. And their workload rating assumes office hours rather than continuous duty.

Where this drive is exactly right
Having ruled out arrays, the legitimate uses are plenty and they are the reason we stock it.
Single-drive workstations and desktop PCs. The role the drive was designed for. A machine that gets switched off at night, running one drive, where long error recovery is a feature rather than a fault.
Standalone secondary storage. A data drive in a workstation alongside a boot SSD, holding project files, scratch space or local backups.
Legacy equipment replacement. DVRs, standalone recorders, kiosks, test rigs and embedded systems that shipped with a desktop-class drive and were designed around one.
Imaging and cloning targets. Bench work where you need a cheap known-good drive to write an image onto.
Non-critical file storage. Where the data is backed up elsewhere and the drive is convenience rather than protection.
In all of these it does the job at a lower price than an enterprise drive, and paying the enterprise premium would buy capability the role never uses.

The older interface generation is not a limitation here. SATA is compatible in both directions, so a 3Gb/s drive runs in a 6Gb/s port at 3Gb/s and a 6Gb/s drive runs in a 3Gb/s port at 3Gb/s. Nothing breaks either way.
More importantly, a 7200 RPM mechanical drive cannot sustain data rates anywhere near 3Gb/s except in short bursts from cache. The platters are the bottleneck, not the interface, so the link speed makes no practical difference to how this drive performs.
That is why 3Gb/s drives remain entirely usable. The situation is completely different for SSDs, which genuinely saturate 6Gb/s and would be badly constrained at half that.
Reading the Seagate part number
Seagate uses two identification systems. The model number format like ST500DM002 encodes form factor, capacity and interface. The part number format like 9FT066-005 identifies a specific build and firmware configuration.
Both appear on the drive label. When ordering a replacement for equipment that specifies a part number in its documentation, use the part number rather than an equivalent model — on embedded and legacy systems the firmware configuration occasionally matters.
