Barcode & Labelling for Healthcare
Healthcare labelling has a requirement other sectors do not: a mislabelled specimen or an unreadable wristband is a patient safety event, not an inconvenience. That changes which specifications actually matter when selecting hardware.

Wristbands, specimen labels and pharmacy labelling
The defining constraint in healthcare is label size. Specimen vials, unit-dose blister packaging and surgical instrument tags leave very little room, so codes are printed at densities that defeat ordinary equipment.
Two specifications follow from that. On the print side, 300 dpi rather than 203 dpi is often necessary for small 2D codes to be readable at all. On the scan side, a scanner reading down to 3 mil handles codes roughly 40 percent finer than a typical 5 mil entry-level imager.
The failure mode when this is specified wrongly is subtle and worth knowing: the scanner does not fail outright, it just needs two or three attempts per scan. Nobody logs it as a fault, and the time cost accumulates invisibly across a shift.

Printers that handle wristbands as well as labels
Media flexibility matters more in healthcare than in most sectors, because the same counter often needs to produce a patient identification band, a specimen label and a printed receipt or record.
Desktop thermal transfer units such as the Zebra ZD421 handle labels, tags, wristbands and receipts from one machine, which suits clinic reception and outpatient departments. Where the label is generated by a dispensing or POS system that speaks ESC/POS rather than ZPL, the Epson TM-L90 avoids building a second integration entirely.
One practical point on print method: direct thermal fades within months under heat and light, which is fine for a wristband worn for three days or a specimen label used within weeks. For anything that must remain legible in a record for years, thermal transfer with a ribbon is required.
Change control and drop-in replacement
In regulated environments, changing a printer configuration in a dispensing system means opening a change-control process. That single fact often decides the purchase.
Printers with ZPL or ESC/POS emulation drop into an existing configuration without touching the host system, so a failed unit can be replaced same-day rather than waiting on a process. The Bixolon XD3-40t is a common choice for exactly this reason.
Mobile devices at the bedside
Devices carried between wards need to be wiped down, survive being dropped on a hard floor, and be comfortable to hold for a full shift. A compact 5-inch device is meaningfully easier to carry all day than a 6-inch warehouse handheld, which is why the Honeywell CT45 and Datalogic Memor 11 both appear frequently in healthcare deployments.
If any part of the workflow involves chilled pharmaceutical storage, check the operating temperature limit carefully. Several compact devices stop at -10°C, which rules out cold-chain areas.
Storage and records retention
Imaging archives, records retention and backup targets are capacity problems rather than latency problems, which makes 7200 RPM nearline drives the right tier. Clinical systems with transactional load need 10K or 15K SAS instead.
