The C1000-8FP-E-2G is a Cisco Catalyst 1000 series access switch with eight PoE ports and two uplinks. For a switch bought to power devices, there is one number that decides whether it does the job.

PoE budget, not port count

The specification that matters, and the one most often skipped.

A switch with eight PoE ports does not necessarily power eight devices at full draw. Each switch has a total PoE power budget shared across all ports, and when the budget is exhausted further devices simply do not power up.

The FP in this model designation indicates full PoE across the ports, which is what you want when every port needs to power something. But confirm the actual budget figure against Cisco's documentation for this specific model before planning a deployment.

Two things to work out before ordering.

What each device actually draws. PoE standards define power classes, and devices differ considerably β€” a basic access point draws far less than a pan-tilt-zoom camera with a heater.

Total draw against budget, with headroom. Sizing to exactly the budget leaves nothing for a device replaced with a hungrier model later. Our switch buying guide covers this calculation properly.

The failure mode is worth knowing: devices that will not power on, or that power on and drop off intermittently as the budget is exceeded. It looks like a device fault rather than a switch limit.

Uplinks and what they constrain

The two uplink ports are how this switch connects to the rest of the network, and they set a real limit.

All traffic from the eight access ports passes through those uplinks. Where devices are mostly talking to servers elsewhere rather than to each other, the uplink is the bottleneck rather than the access ports.

Two consequences.

Check the uplink speed against expected traffic. Eight cameras writing continuously to a recorder elsewhere is a meaningful sustained load.

Two uplinks can be used for resilience rather than capacity β€” connecting to two different switches so the loss of one does not isolate the site. Which you need depends on whether availability or throughput matters more.

Where an eight-port switch fits

This is an access switch for small deployments, and it is worth being clear about that.

Good fit: a small branch office, a floor cupboard serving a handful of devices, a camera cluster, a small retail site, or a departmental area within a larger building. Our branch cabinets guide covers the wider hardware picture for those locations.

Poor fit: anywhere that will grow past eight ports soon. Adding a second small switch alongside the first is a common outcome and rarely the best one β€” it adds a hop, more points of failure and more management.

Count the ports you need, add the ones you will need within the equipment's life, and buy for that number rather than today's.

Where these switches actually fail

Worth knowing because it changes where you put one.

Small switches in branch locations fail mostly from heat. They end up in cupboards, under counters and in ceiling voids with no ventilation, and PoE switches generate meaningful heat precisely because they are delivering power.

Two practical points. Ventilate the location rather than assuming a small switch does not need it. And note that a PoE switch under load runs hotter than the same switch with nothing powered β€” a site that was fine may not be after cameras are added.

Managed switch considerations

Three things worth establishing before buying any managed switch.

How you will reach it. A managed switch at a remote site needs a management path, and if that path runs through the switch itself you have no access when it misbehaves. Our out-of-band guide covers this.

Feature availability. Cisco's Catalyst 1000 line targets small deployments, and its feature set is narrower than the larger Catalyst families. Confirm the specific features your design needs are present on this model rather than assuming from the Catalyst name β€” segmentation capabilities in particular vary, as our segmentation guide covers.

Configuration backup. A switch configuration that exists only on the switch is lost when the switch is. Export it and store it somewhere that survives the site β€” our documentation guide covers this.

Before you order

How many devices need PoE, and what each draws. Your total against the switch budget, with headroom. What uplink speed the site needs and whether you want two uplinks for resilience or capacity. Where the switch will physically sit and whether that location is ventilated. And how you will reach it for management if it is remote.

Common questions

Can eight PoE ports power eight devices?

Only within the total PoE budget, which is shared across all ports. Work out what each device actually draws, total it against the budget and leave headroom β€” when the budget is exhausted, devices simply do not power up or drop off intermittently.

My camera will not power on. Is it faulty?

Check the PoE budget first. Devices that will not start, or that power on and drop off intermittently, are a classic sign of an exhausted budget rather than a device fault β€” and it looks exactly like a hardware problem.

Are the two uplinks for speed or resilience?

Either, and you choose. Connecting both to one switch gives capacity; connecting them to two different switches means losing one does not isolate the site. All access port traffic passes through the uplinks, so check their speed against expected load.
