USB, serial, parallel and Ethernet on a single 5.3 lb printer looks like over-specification until you have tried to connect a modern printer to a system built in 2006.
Serial survives because a great deal of industrial and retail equipment still emits RS-232. Scales, weighing systems, test equipment, PLC-driven lines and older POS controllers frequently drive a printer directly over serial with no PC involved. There is no USB option on those systems.
Parallel survives for the same reason a decade further back, usually on legacy host systems or dedicated print controllers that were never migrated.
Ethernet is what you want wherever possible. It makes the printer a shared network device rather than a peripheral tied to one workstation, lets several benches queue to it, and means replacing the PC on the bench does not involve reinstalling the printer.
USB is the simplest single-workstation connection and the one most driver installations assume.
A printer carrying all four is effectively future-proof in both directions: it will connect to the serial device you have now and to the network you will have later. Where the E-4205A sits in a Datamax estate
Most sites running Datamax do not run one model. They run a heavy industrial printer where the volume is, and desktop units at the benches around it.
The Datamax H-Class at 40 lbs is the industrial end: a metal-framed machine for continuous production duty. The E-4205A at 5.3 lbs is the desktop end: a bench printer for the goods-in desk, the returns station, the office, the QA bench or a satellite despatch point.
Keeping both on DPL is the entire point. The same label formats print on both, the same host integration addresses both, and staff moving between stations do not have to learn two systems. When the desktop unit at the returns desk fails, it is replaced with another DPL printer and nothing upstream changes.
Where the E-4205A is the wrong choice is sustained high-volume printing. At 5.3 lbs this is a light chassis, and a light chassis flexes as the printhead heats and cools through thousands of cycles a day, which shows up as print quality drifting across a shift. Direct thermal: what it suits and what it does not
This unit is direct thermal. Heat darkens a coated label directly, so there is no ribbon to buy, thread or run out of mid-shift, and the only consumable is the label stock.
That is right for the work a desktop Datamax normally does: despatch and carrier labels, pick and pack labels, goods-in and returns labels, and production paperwork. All are read and discarded within days.
It is wrong for asset tags, bin and rack location labels, and anything that has to stay readable for years. Direct thermal output fades with heat, light and abrasion, and no darkness setting changes that. Those need thermal transfer with a ribbon. The second point about direct thermal is media quality. Cheap thermal stock is the single most common cause of faint print and premature printhead wear, and the saving on a case of labels is routinely wiped out by one printhead replacement. See label media selection.
Buying it refurbished: the two parts that wear
A printer at this age is bought refurbished, and that is a reasonable way to buy one, because desktop thermal printers have very little to fail mechanically. Almost all the wear is in two components.
The printhead. A consumable rated in length of media printed and the most expensive single part. A failing head prints a thin white line down the length of every label, which is burnt-out elements rather than dirt, and cleaning will not recover it. Ask about head condition and whether it has been replaced.
The platen roller. The rubber roller that drives the media. Flat spots, hardening or adhesive build-up cause tracking drift and inconsistent darkness, and this is misdiagnosed as a printhead problem more often than anything else in thermal printing.
Then confirm the box contents and, on this model specifically, the interface. Power supply, power cable, interface cable and media spindle go missing from refurbished listings routinely, and a printer without its power supply is not a working printer.
