What is the Dell PowerEdge R630?
A dual-socket 1U rack server on socket LGA 2011-3, supporting Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors, with DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and iDRAC8 remote management.
Processors, memory and management match the R730. Everything the chassis height affects is different, and that is the whole comparison.
R630 vs R730: which should I buy?
Four differences.
Drive bays. The R630 takes far fewer β commonly 8 or 10 small form factor bays, against up to 24 on the R730. If storage capacity lives in the server, this decides it.
Expansion slots. Fewer, and low-profile only. A full-height card does not fit, and a card shipped with only a full-height bracket needs the low-profile one sourced separately β our PCIe guide covers this.
Noise. 1U cools with small fast fans rather than large slow ones, which makes it noticeably louder. Not a machine for a room where people work β our noise guide covers siting.
Rack density. Twice as many machines per rack, which is the whole point where rack space is scarce or expensive.

The R630 NVMe configuration
The thing that makes this machine more interesting than a straight cut-down R730.
Some R630 builds provide NVMe-capable front bays, which lets a 1U machine carry very fast local storage without consuming expansion slots.
Three things to confirm before assuming yours has it.
NVMe support is per-bay, not per-chassis. A bay that physically accepts an NVMe drive may have no PCIe lanes routed to it β our backplanes guide covers why lane routing is a physical wiring decision.
NVMe drives bypass the RAID controller entirely, connecting over PCIe. That means no controller-level redundancy, so protection comes from software β our NVMe drive guide covers the implications.
NVMe bays consume lanes from the same budget as expansion slots, which is a real constraint in a 1U machine that has few slots to begin with.
Where this configuration fits: databases and virtualisation hosts needing fast local storage in minimal rack space. Where it does not: anything needing bulk capacity, since bay count is small regardless.
R630 processor and memory support
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 on LGA 2011-3, with the firmware caveat common to the generation: v4 needs firmware support the unit may not have. A v4 processor fits a v3 board and will not post without it, so update before installing β our E5 v4 guide covers this.
Memory is 24 DIMM slots of DDR4 registered ECC, twelve per processor. Single-processor machines populate twelve only, channels must be filled evenly, and speed can drop as slots fill.
One constraint specific to 1U: high-power processors are harder to cool, so check which processors your configuration supports rather than assuming the whole family is available. Heatsinks are 1U-specific parts.
Do I need iDRAC Enterprise on an R630?
Worth settling before purchase, and it matters more on a 1U machine than people think.
Basic iDRAC gives health monitoring. Remote console and virtual media generally need the Enterprise licence β exactly what you want when a machine will not boot.

What is missing from a used R630?
Rails, which stay in the rack. Drive carriers for empty bays. Risers β and with fewer of them in 1U, a missing riser removes a larger share of your expansion capability. Low-profile brackets for any cards. The PERC cache battery, without which write performance collapses with no error reported. And the iDRAC licence.
