Why form factor is the first filter

The bare drive advantage

This is the manufacturer part rather than an OEM-branded one, and for the right chassis that is a meaningful saving rather than a compromise.

An HPE, Dell, IBM or Lenovo drive of the same capacity and interface is usually the same mechanism, from one of the three remaining manufacturers, in a vendor carrier with vendor firmware. You pay for the carrier and the firmware validation.

In a chassis that needs neither β€” Supermicro, white-box builds, generic-tray enclosures, JBODs β€” the OEM premium buys nothing. The bare manufacturer part does the identical job for less.

A 2U chassis with twenty-four SFF bays filled with these gives you a substantial number of spindles working in parallel. Since IOPS scale with spindle count, that parallelism is what makes the array capable of serving many concurrent virtual machines without any one of them waiting on disk.

600GB per drive then provides enough total capacity that the datastore is useful without needing an external enclosure. Smaller drives would mean more bays for the same volume; larger ones would mean fewer spindles for the same capacity, and fewer spindles means less concurrency.

Later generations moved to 1.2TB at 10K, doubling capacity per bay, but the underlying design principle is the same: enough spindles for the workload, enough capacity per spindle to fill the volume.

SAS 6Gb/s and generation mixing
