Temperature gets the attention in equipment rooms, and it is only one of three environmental factors that damage hardware. The other two act slowly enough that nobody connects the failures to the cause.

Humidity cuts both ways

Both extremes cause problems, which is why the target is a band rather than a maximum.

Too dry and static becomes a hazard. Low humidity lets charge build up on people and surfaces, and that discharge damages components β€” frequently not visibly. The damage is latent: a component that works now and fails weeks later, which makes the cause impossible to identify after the fact. Too damp and you get corrosion on contacts and connectors, and in the worst case condensation. Corrosion is slow and cumulative, showing up as intermittent connection faults that get blamed on cables.

The practical points: monitor humidity as well as temperature, since most environmental sensors report both and most people watch only one. And be aware that heating and cooling both dry air out, so a room that is comfortable can still be too dry.

Dust does more damage than people expect

Three distinct mechanisms.

It insulates. Dust on heatsinks and in fan blades restricts airflow, which raises temperatures, which raises fan speed β€” so a dusty machine runs hotter and louder while reporting nothing wrong. Our noise guide covers why a machine that got louder is telling you something.

It accumulates unevenly. Filters and intakes clog first, so the machines nearest the floor or the door suffer most.

Some dust conducts. Metallic and carbon-bearing dust in industrial settings is actively conductive, which is a different order of risk from ordinary household dust.

The sources worth knowing: construction and building work is the big one, since drilling and cutting produce fine dust that travels much further than people assume. Cardboard and paper shed continuously, which is why unpacking in the equipment room is a bad habit. And carpet in an equipment room sheds fibres and generates static, making it doubly wrong.

What to do about it

Five things, in rough order of effect per effort.

Keep the room sealed and the door shut. Free, and it is most of the battle.

Unpack elsewhere. Cardboard belongs outside the room entirely.

Protect during building work β€” this is the single highest-risk period, and equipment rooms are routinely left open during it. Seal vents and cover equipment if work is happening nearby.

Clean filters on a schedule where equipment has them, and check them rather than assuming. A clogged filter is an airflow problem wearing a different hat.

Clean equipment periodically, with compressed air and the machine powered down, blowing outward rather than driving dust further in.

Corrosive atmospheres

A narrower issue that matters enormously where it applies.

Some environments carry gases that attack electronics β€” sulphur compounds near waste treatment or certain industrial processes, salt air in coastal locations, chlorine near pools and water treatment.

The effect is gradual corrosion of contacts and circuit board traces, producing intermittent faults that migrate around a system and defeat diagnosis. Equipment fails earlier than it should for reasons nobody identifies.

Monitor the room, not just the machines

Servers report their inlet temperature, which is useful and incomplete.

Three things worth monitoring independently.

Temperature at several points, since a room average hides hot spots β€” and inlet temperature at the equipment is what matters, not the thermostat reading, as our airflow guide covers.

Humidity, for the reasons above.

Water. A leak detector near any water risk β€” under a raised floor, below pipework, near cooling equipment β€” is inexpensive and catches something nothing else will.
