Choosing a capacity point deliberately
Most people pick drive capacity by dividing the required volume size by the bay count. That works, and it misses the constraint that actually bites later.
The question worth asking first is: how long can this array run degraded?
Rebuild time scales with capacity. At 2TB it is a few hours. At 6TB it is longer but still bounded. At 12TB and above it can exceed a day. Throughout that window the array is running without its full redundancy, every surviving drive is under sustained read load, and a second failure means data loss.

Nearline is a workload description, not a quality tier
The word gets read as "lesser", and it is not. Nearline describes what the drive is optimised for rather than how good it is.
These drives are built for sequential access at sustained duty. Large streaming writes, large streaming reads, running continuously. Backup software writing a nightly job, a surveillance system recording twenty-four hours a day, an archive absorbing bulk data — all sequential, all continuous.
The workload rating on an enterprise nearline drive is far above a desktop drive, and they include rotational vibration compensation for densely populated chassis and enterprise error recovery timing so RAID controllers behave correctly. In their intended role they are the right tool, not a compromise.
Where they are genuinely wrong is random I/O. Put a busy virtualisation datastore on 7200 RPM spindles and the seek latency becomes the bottleneck immediately. That is a 10K or 15K job.

Video retention is one of the clearest cases for a drive at this capacity, and it is worth walking through because the sizing logic is unusually concrete.
Surveillance storage is continuous sequential write with occasional sequential read when footage is retrieved. There is essentially no random I/O, which makes nearline drives ideal and performance drives a waste of money.
The sizing input is retention period multiplied by camera count multiplied by bitrate. That produces a required capacity that is usually fixed by policy or regulation rather than negotiable, which means you are choosing how to reach a number rather than choosing how much to buy.
At that point the question becomes bay count versus drive capacity, and the rebuild consideration above applies. A recorder that loses its array mid-retention-period has a compliance problem as well as a technical one, which is a good argument for double parity and a spare on the shelf.
Bare drive, generic chassis
This is the manufacturer part with no server carrier and no OEM firmware coding, suiting Supermicro builds, white-box storage servers, JBOD enclosures, NAS units and surveillance recorders using generic trays. It costs less than an OEM-branded drive on the same mechanism.
