Switch Line Cards and Modular Chassis: What Fits and Why
Modular chassis switches take line cards the way a blade chassis takes blades, and the compatibility rules are just as strict. This covers what a line card is, what decides whether one fits, and what to check before buying one used.
What is a switch line card?
A module that provides ports, slotting into a modular chassis switch alongside other line cards and a supervisor.
A fixed switch has its ports built in. A modular chassis has slots, and you populate them with line cards of whatever port type you need β copper, fibre, different speeds, PoE. The supervisor engine (or equivalent) is the module that runs the switch; the line cards are the ports.
Common families are Cisco Catalyst 4500, 6500, 9400 and 9600, Cisco Nexus 7000 and 9500, and equivalent modular platforms from other vendors. Line cards are chassis-family-specific and do not cross between families.
What decides whether a line card fits my chassis?
Four things, in the order they stop a purchase.
Chassis family and generation. A line card fits its own family only. Within a family, newer chassis may not accept older cards, and older chassis do not accept newer cards.
Supervisor engine. The supervisor sets which line cards are supported. Upgrading the supervisor can enable newer cards; an old supervisor may not recognise a newer card at all.
Software version. Line cards require a minimum software version on the supervisor. A card that is physically and electrically compatible may still not come up on old software. Our firmware guide covers why version consistency matters.
Power budget. Chassis power supplies have a limit, and high-density or PoE line cards draw a lot. Adding a card can exceed the budget, and the chassis will refuse to power it. Check power headroom before buying, and note that redundant power configuration reduces available budget.
Do I need a specific supervisor for my line card?
Yes, and this is the compatibility rule most buyers miss.
Vendor compatibility matrices list line cards against supervisor engines, not just against chassis. A card listed for your chassis may require a supervisor you do not have. Before buying a line card, confirm your exact supervisor model and software version, then check the matrix for that combination.

Buying used line cards: what to check
Five things.
The exact part number, including any suffix. Line card part numbers are precise and a similar number is a different card.
Compatibility with your chassis, supervisor and software, per above.
Power draw against your headroom.
Whether transceivers are included. Fibre line cards ship without optics; a used card frequently has had its transceivers removed. Our transceiver form factors guide covers what the card takes.
Licensing. Some line card features and some port speeds are licensed separately. A card that works may not deliver every feature without a licence. Our support guide covers where licensing sits.
Line card vs fixed switch: which is right?
An honest comparison.
Modular chassis make sense at the core and distribution layer of a larger network, where port types change over time and the chassis outlives several generations of line cards. The chassis is expensive; the line cards are the ongoing cost.
Fixed switches are simpler, cheaper per port, and independent. For access layer, branch sites and small networks, fixed switches are the sensible default β our switch buying guide covers choosing them.
Where you already run a modular chassis, adding a line card to a free slot is frequently the cheapest way to add ports. Where you do not, a fixed switch usually wins.
What happens at chassis end of life?
The same trap as blade chassis: when the chassis or supervisor goes end of life, every line card in it is effectively end of life too.
Two consequences. Hold spare line cards and a spare supervisor while they are still available β our spares guide covers building that holding. Frequently asked questions
Will any line card fit my Catalyst chassis?
No. A line card must match the chassis family and generation, be supported by your supervisor engine, meet the minimum software version, and fit within the chassis power budget. Check the vendor matrix for your exact supervisor and software.
Why does my new line card not come up?
Usually supervisor support, software version or power budget. A card that is physically compatible may need a newer supervisor or software, or the chassis may lack power headroom to bring it up.
Do used line cards include transceivers?
Frequently not. Fibre line cards ship without optics, and used cards have usually had their transceivers removed before resale. Budget for optics separately.
Can I upgrade my supervisor to support newer line cards?
Frequently yes, within the same chassis family. A newer supervisor can enable newer line cards. Check that the chassis itself supports the newer supervisor first.
