Zebra Mobile Label Printers: ZQ, QLn, RW and QL

Almost nobody searches for a Zebra mobile printer by name. They search for the thing printed on the label of the unit that has just died on a delivery round, and then they try to work out what the letters and numbers in front of them actually mean. ZQ620, QLn320, RW420, QL420 Plus: four families, three generations, and a numbering scheme that is more logical than it first looks.

This guide decodes the naming, maps each older model onto its modern equivalent, and sets out the handful of specifications that decide whether a replacement drops straight into your workflow or breaks it. Decoding the model numbers

The first useful fact is that the last part of the model number tells you the print width class, and it does so consistently across all four families. That single rule answers most of the questions people arrive with.

Inside the current ZQ series the last two digits step through the widths. The ZQ610 is the 2 inch class unit, recorded at a 1.9 inch print width, or 48 mm. The ZQ620 is the 3 inch class unit, recorded at 2.8 inches, or 72 mm. The ZQ630 is the 4 inch class unit, recorded at 4.1 inches, or 104 mm. So 10, 20 and 30 map to roughly 2, 3 and 4 inches respectively.

In the older families the number is more literal. The QLn220 is 2 inches, the QLn320 is 3 inches, and the QLn420, RW420 and QL420 Plus are all 4 inches. The ZQ320 follows that older convention rather than the ZQ610 and ZQ620 one, and is recorded at a 3 inch print width.

It is worth being precise about the ZQ figures rather than rounding them, because the difference is real on a narrow label. A ZQ610 at 1.9 inches is very slightly narrower than a QLn220 at 2 inches, and a ZQ620 at 2.8 inches is slightly narrower than a QLn320 at 3 inches. If your existing label design uses the full printable width of a QLn, check the artwork against the recorded figure for the ZQ unit before you commit to a fleet swap. On the ZQ610 the recorded media width range runs from 1.0 to 2.18 inches, on the ZQ620 from 1.0 to 3.125 inches, and on the ZQ630 up to 4.45 inches, so the media the printer will accept and the area it will actually print on are two separate numbers.

The family letters are generations, not tiers

The second thing people get wrong is assuming the letters indicate a quality tier, as though QL were the budget line and ZQ the premium one. They do not. The letters are generations, and they sit in a straightforward sequence.

QL and RW are the older families. These are the earliest units on this list and the ones most commonly being retired now.

QLn is the middle generation. It replaced the QL family and is the generation most widely deployed in operations that have refreshed once but not twice.

ZQ is the current family. It is what a QLn unit is replaced with today.

That gives you the mapping most readers arrive looking for. In the 4 inch class, a QL420 Plus or an RW420 maps to a QLn420, and then on to a ZQ630. In the 2 inch class, a QLn220 maps to a ZQ610. In the 3 inch class, a QLn320 maps to a ZQ620, bearing in mind the recorded width difference noted above.

Where a field reads "Confirmed on unit", that specification is not recorded against the listing and we confirm it on the actual printer before despatch. We would rather tell you what is genuinely on the unit in front of us than repeat a figure from a family datasheet that may not match the configuration you receive. Part numbers matter for the same reason: the ZQ610 is held under several part numbers including ZQ61-HUFA0D0-00, and the specific variant is worth confirming if you are matching an existing deployment.

The migration fact that matters most: label formats usually survive

This is the single piece of information that changes how much work a replacement represents, and it is good news. Every unit on this list that carries a recorded language set speaks ZPL, and the QLn, RW, QL and ZQ320 entries are recorded specifically as ZPL and ZPL II. That means a Zebra to Zebra mobile replacement usually does not touch your label formats at all. The same label template that a QL420 Plus has been printing for years is the same template a QLn420 or a ZQ630 will print.

That is not a small thing. On most sites the label format is the part nobody wants to touch, because it is embedded in a warehouse system or a route application that may not have been changed in a long time. If the printer language does not change, the replacement is a hardware swap and a network configuration job, not a software project.

Now the caveat, and it is the one that catches people out. The ZQ610 and ZQ620 are additionally recorded with CPCL, alongside EPL and ZPL. CPCL is the older mobile-specific Zebra language, and it was very widely used on the QL and RW generation of devices. If your application emits CPCL rather than ZPL, then that entry on the list is the one that matters to you, because it is the thing that decides whether your existing print stream works untouched or has to be rewritten.

So the rule is: find out what your application actually emits before you choose a model. If it emits ZPL, the field is wide open. If it emits CPCL, narrow your shortlist accordingly and confirm the language set on the exact unit before ordering. The ZQ630 entry does not carry a recorded language list, so on that model in particular the supported languages are confirmed on the unit. Connectivity is the clearest generation marker

If you want to tell at a glance which generation a mobile printer belongs to, look at how it connects. The pattern is consistent across the list.

The ZQ610 and ZQ620 are recorded with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2, including both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy. That is the current generation signature.

The QLn units are recorded with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but without a version recorded against either. That is typical of the middle generation, and it is exactly the case where we confirm what radio is fitted on the actual unit, because QLn printers were built in a range of radio configurations.

The RW420 is recorded with USB, Serial and Bluetooth, with no Wi-Fi recorded at all. Serial on a mobile printer is a strong generational tell, and it also tells you something about how the unit was meant to be used, which is cabled to a vehicle-mounted terminal rather than roaming on a site network. Connectivity on the QL420 Plus is not recorded, so that one is confirmed on the unit.

Here is the practical consequence, and it is the reason this section is not just trivia. An older mobile printer sitting on an older Wi-Fi standard can be the thing that holds back a network refresh. When a site upgrades its access points, the network team usually wants to retire the older standards and the legacy security modes that go with them. Every device that cannot join the new network on the new terms has to be either kept on a legacy network segment or replaced, and mobile printers are the devices most likely to be forgotten in that survey because they live in vehicles and on trolleys rather than on desks.

Do the printer audit before the access point order, not after. Count the mobile printers, record what radio each one has, and decide which ones are being replaced as part of the network project rather than discovering it on cutover weekend. Printer memory, and why it matters more on a mobile unit

The ZQ610, ZQ620 and ZQ630 are all recorded at 512MB Flash and 256MB RAM. Nothing is recorded for the QLn, RW or QL units, so on those models the memory fitted is confirmed on the unit.

It is worth explaining what printer memory actually buys, because it is easy to dismiss as a specification that only matters to developers. Flash memory holds stored label formats and fonts on the printer itself. When a format is stored on the printer, the application calls it by name and sends only the variable data: the order number, the address, the weight, the barcode value. When it is not stored, the entire format has to be transmitted with every single job, including any graphics or logos it contains.

On a desk printer with a cable this is a difference you might not notice. On a mobile printer the wireless link is the slow part of the whole chain, and it is also the least reliable part. Sending a few hundred bytes of variable data rather than a full format with an embedded logo on every label is the difference between a label that appears immediately and one that makes the driver stand at the back of the van waiting. Multiply that across a route and it becomes real time.

RAM is the working space the printer uses to build the label image before it prints it. A label with a large graphic, several fonts and a 2D barcode needs somewhere to assemble that image, and running short shows up as slow printing or jobs that fail on complex labels but work on simple ones.

The practical advice is the same either way: store your formats and fonts on the printer rather than streaming them. It is the cheapest performance improvement available on a mobile fleet and it costs nothing but the time to set it up once. Weight is the specification the operator actually feels

Every specification on this page is abstract except one. Weight is the thing the person carrying the printer notices, hour after hour, and it tracks print width closely.

The recorded figures run as follows: 1 lb on the ZQ320, 1.4 lbs on the QLn220 and the QLn220 Healthcare, 1.6 lbs on the QLn320, 1.75 lbs on the ZQ630, and 2 to 2.5 lbs across the QLn420, RW420 and QL420 Plus.

The spread between the lightest and the heaviest on that list is more than double. A pound of difference sounds trivial written down and is not trivial worn on a belt for an eight hour shift, particularly alongside a handheld terminal, a scanner and whatever else the role requires. Sizing up on print width carries an ergonomic cost, and that cost is paid by the operator for the whole shift, not by the person making the purchasing decision.

So the rule is simple: let the label size decide the print width, not the wish for flexibility. The instinct to buy the 4 inch model "in case we need it later" is understandable and it is usually wrong. If the labels you actually print are 2 inches wide, a 2 inch printer prints them, weighs less, and will be complained about less. Flexibility you never use is just weight.

The one place where flexibility is worth the weight is where a single role genuinely prints two different label types, for example a route label and a carrier label from the same round. That is a real requirement and it justifies the wider unit. A hypothetical future requirement does not.

The 4 inch question, which is the clearest rule here

If you take one buying rule away from this article, take this one.

A carrier shipping label is 4 inches wide. That is the standard format across the parcel carriers, and it is not negotiable, because the carrier defines it and their scanners and sortation equipment expect it. Any work that involves producing a carrier shipping label in the field, or proof of delivery documentation in that format, needs a 4 inch printer. That means the ZQ630, the QLn420, the RW420 or the QL420 Plus from this list.

The corollary is the part people get wrong. A 2 inch printer cannot produce a carrier shipping label at all. It is not a case of the label being cramped or the barcode being small. The media physically will not fit and the printer cannot place marks across a 4 inch width. There is no configuration setting, firmware version or driver that changes this. If someone specifies a 2 inch unit for a role that has to print carrier labels, that deployment fails on day one.

So start the sizing conversation with the widest label the role has to produce, not the most common one. The most common label on a round might be a 2 inch price or route label printed forty times a day, and if the same round produces three carrier labels a day, the printer still has to be a 4 inch unit. Width is decided by the widest requirement, not the typical one.

For anything below that threshold, the narrower units are the better choice on every other axis. Lighter, easier to hold, easier to wear.

The QLn220 Healthcare variant

The QLn220 Healthcare sits under a different part number prefix from the standard QLn220: QH2-AUNA0M00-00 rather than QN2-AUNA0M00-00. Its recorded printing specification is otherwise identical to the standard QLn220: 2 inch print width, ZPL and ZPL II, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, 1.4 lbs.

That is worth taking seriously because cleaning chemistry is what destroys printers in clinical settings. A plastic housing that is not rated for a given disinfectant will craze, discolour and eventually crack, and the failure appears months into deployment rather than during evaluation. Direct thermal, and what that rules out

Everything mobile on this list is direct thermal in practice. The ZQ630 is explicitly recorded as direct thermal at 203 dpi, and the format is effectively universal on battery-powered label printers for the obvious reason: a ribbon supply and take-up mechanism is bulk and weight that a handheld device cannot carry, and a ribbon is a consumable that has to be changed in the field.

Direct thermal means heat darkens a coated label directly. The only consumable is the label stock, there is nothing to thread, and nothing runs out halfway through a round except the labels themselves. On a mobile printer that is exactly the right trade.

What it costs you is permanence. Direct thermal output fades with heat, light and abrasion, and no darkness setting, media grade or firmware option changes that chemistry. A label left on a dashboard in the sun will darken. A label rubbed repeatedly in transit will lose contrast. A label stored for years will not be readable.

That makes the suitability question easy to answer. Direct thermal is correct for despatch labels, proof of delivery, route and delivery labels, price and markdown labels, and anything else that is read within days or weeks and then discarded. It is wrong for asset tags, equipment labels, archive and records labelling, or anything that has to stay readable for years.

Buying a mobile printer refurbished: what to confirm

Mobile printers refurbish well, and they are bought refurbished more often than most categories, because the alternative is buying new to replace a unit that is one of forty identical units already in service. Keeping a fleet consistent is a legitimate reason to buy an older generation deliberately.

There is one thing that trips people up more than any other, and it has nothing to do with the printer itself. Battery, charger and any vehicle mount are separate items. A mobile printer is a battery-powered device, and a battery-powered device with no way to charge it is not a working printer. It is a printer-shaped object that works until the charge in it runs out.

This matters more than it sounds, because chargers for mobile printers are model-specific, come in single-bay and multi-bay forms, and the multi-bay chargers that a fleet actually needs are a separate purchase again. Vehicle mounts and vehicle charging cradles are a third category. None of these are assumed to be in the box unless stated.

So the buying checklist is short and it is the same every time. Confirm what is included. Ask specifically about the battery, the charger, the type of charger, any vehicle mount, and any belt clip or shoulder strap that the role requires. Then confirm the print width against your widest label, the programming language against what your application emits, and the radio against what your network will accept after its next refresh. If all four answers are right, the unit will work.
