32TB Hard Drives: SMR Risk, Controller Support and RAID

32TB hard drives exist, and the question of whether to buy one is different from the question at 16TB or 20TB. At this capacity the technology, the rebuild risk and the platform support all change. This covers what to know before buying at the top of the range.

What 32TB hard drives are available?

The largest mechanical drives ship from Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba in enterprise nearline lines, in 3.5 inch form factor, helium filled. The exact capacities and part numbers shift as each manufacturer releases the next step, so confirm the current top of each range rather than assuming.

What they share: the newest recording technologies, which is the first thing to understand.

Are 32TB drives SMR or CMR?

Both exist, and the difference matters more here than anywhere.

At the top of the capacity range, manufacturers use SMR to reach the largest numbers and CMR (including newer heat-assisted and energy-assisted recording methods) for drives intended for general enterprise use. The practical rule: for any array, confirm CMR on the datasheet for the exact part number. SMR at this capacity is for hyperscale archive with host software written to handle it, not for a server or NAS.

Will my system support a 32TB drive?

The question that stops most purchases.

Controller capacity limits. Controllers that handled 16TB or 20TB may not handle 32TB. Check the specification and firmware for your exact model. Our controller guide covers identification.

Interface. Most ship in both SATA and SAS. Match your backplane.

RAID with 32TB drives

Rebuild time is the risk.

A 32TB rebuild under load can take days. During that window, a single-parity array has no protection and a second failure loses everything. At this capacity:

RAID 6 or equivalent double parity is the minimum. Triple parity or erasure coding is worth considering for large arrays.

Hot spares are not optional.

Drive count per array group should be limited, because more members means more chance of a second failure during rebuild.

Is 32TB good value?

Usually not per terabyte, and sometimes yes per bay.

The largest capacity carries a premium for being newest. A step or two down, cost per terabyte is typically better and rebuild times shorter. Our 24TB guide and 16TB guide cover the steps below.

Where 32TB wins: bays are the constraint. A chassis that is full and cannot be expanded gets more capacity only by fitting larger drives. In that situation, cost per terabyte is not the deciding number.

When NOT to buy 32TB

Older controllers that cannot address the capacity.

Single-parity arrays that cannot be restructured.

Any array where SMR has not been ruled out for the exact part.

Performance workloads, where a nearline drive is the wrong class regardless of size.

Are 32TB drives helium filled?

Yes. All drives at this capacity are helium filled, which is what allows enough platters in the chassis. The drive reports its helium level in health data, which is worth monitoring.
