AMD Opteron 4340 6-Core Socket C32: Fit and Licensing
The Opteron 4340 is a six-core processor from AMD's Opteron 4300 series, using Socket C32. It sat in a different part of the range from the twelve-core parts, and understanding that difference explains what it is good at.
Fewer cores, higher clock
The design choice that defines this part.
AMD's server range at the time split into two families: high core count parts on Socket G34, and fewer cores at higher clock speeds on Socket C32. The 4300 series is the second group.
Confirm the exact clock speed and power rating against the label or AMD documentation for your specific unit, since the series included several six-core variants.
The two sockets are not interchangeable. A C32 processor does not fit a G34 board and the reverse is equally true, regardless of generation. This is the first thing to check.
Why fewer faster cores is sometimes correct
Not a compromise β a different answer to a different question, and one that still applies today.
Three situations where it wins.
Software licensed per core. This is the big one. Where licensing is charged per core, a six-core processor costs half what a twelve-core one does to license β and if the workload is served by six faster cores, that saving is pure. Workloads that do not parallelise. Some applications are limited by how fast a single thread runs, and adding cores does nothing for them. Many older line-of-business applications behave this way.
Smaller machines. Not every server needs maximum core density. A departmental server or branch machine frequently does better with fewer faster cores and lower power draw.

Matching rules
The same strictness as any multi-socket platform.
Same model across sockets, not merely the same family or a similar specification.
Socket fit is not compatibility. Check against your specific server model, generation and firmware level rather than against C32 β our compatibility guide covers why the socket tells you less than people assume.
Firmware first. Where a processor needs a later firmware level, applying it after installation does not work if the machine will not post.

Read the fitted processor from the system rather than from documentation, since documentation describes what the machine could have and the system reports what it does have.
Where this platform sits now
An honest assessment.
This is an older generation. Per-core performance is below current parts and performance per watt is well below, which means running cost is higher for the same work β our TCO guide covers counting that properly, and it is frequently the argument that decides a refresh.
So the sensible purchases now are about continuity rather than capability.
Replacing a failed processor in a running system.
Populating a second socket for cores or for the PCIe slots wired to it.
Holding a spare for a platform you intend to keep running β and on a platform of this age, buying that spare sooner rather than later matters, because supply now comes from decommissioned equipment rather than manufacturing and that pool only shrinks. Check the bottleneck first
Before buying any processor, two questions worth answering.
Is the processor actually the constraint? On most servers it is not. Your server model and generation. The exact processor model the system reports as fitted. Whether you need the heatsink and additional fans. Your firmware level. Whether this is a replacement or a second socket. And your licensing position, since that frequently changes which processor is the right answer.

Can I use this in a Socket G34 board?
No. C32 and G34 are not interchangeable in either direction, regardless of generation. The 4300 series is C32; the higher core count Opterons are G34. This is the first thing to check.
