Branch Site IT Equipment: What Actually Survives the Room
Equipment at a branch site fails for different reasons than equipment in a data centre, and the difference is almost always environmental. This covers what actually works in a room that was not designed for IT.
The three things that kill branch equipment
Heat. A cabinet in a cupboard with no ventilation becomes an oven. This is the single most common cause of branch hardware failure, and it is entirely avoidable.
Dust. Branch sites are frequently in working environments β back rooms, workshops, storerooms β where dust levels are far higher than a machine room. Our server room guide covers why dust is a slow failure.
Power. Branch power is frequently less clean and less protected than at a main site, and nobody notices until equipment starts failing early.
Notice that none of these is about the equipment. Branch failures are usually siting failures.
Ventilation is not optional
A sealed cabinet needs one of three things.
Vented doors, front and back, with clear air paths. The cheapest answer and adequate for light loads in a room that is itself cooled.
Cabinet fans, which move air through the cabinet actively. Necessary where the cabinet is enclosed or the load is meaningful.
Room cooling, where the load is high enough that moving air around the room is not enough.
The mistake to avoid: a solid-door cabinet in a cupboard with no airflow. It looks tidy and secure, and it cooks everything inside.
Choosing a cabinet
Four things beyond U count.
Depth. Communications cabinets are frequently too shallow for servers. Measure the deepest thing you will install, plus rear clearance for cables. Our rack depth guide covers this.
Wall-mounted or floor-standing. Wall cabinets suit network equipment and save floor space; they have weight limits and are usually shallow. Floor-standing suits anything with a server in it.

Lock and access. Branch cabinets are frequently in areas where non-IT staff work.
Tower or rack at a branch?
An honest comparison, because the default answer is frequently wrong.
A tower server runs cooler and much quieter, sits on a floor or shelf without a cabinet, and is the sensible choice where there is one server and no machine room. Our tower server guide covers the option.
A small rack makes sense where there is network equipment to mount, where security or tidiness matters, or where there is more than one device.

What branch sites need that main sites take for granted
Four things.

Temperature monitoring with alerts. Nobody visits a branch cupboard until something breaks, which is precisely why it needs monitoring more than a staffed room does.
