Datalogic Gryphon GD4500 vs GBT4500 Compared
The short answer is that the Datalogic Gryphon GD4500 and the GBT4500 are the same scanner with the cable removed. Both are 2D area imagers using a megapixel sensor, both read down to a 3 mil minimum resolution, both reach up to 66 cm, both decode the same 1D, 2D, PDF417, QR Code, Data Matrix and GS1 DataBar set of over 40 symbologies, and both carry the same 1.8 m drop resistance to concrete. The optics do not change when you take the cable off.
So do not choose on read performance, because on the recorded specifications there is no read performance difference to choose on. Choose on whether the operator walks. If the item comes to the operator at a fixed position, buy the corded GD4500. If the operator has to walk to the item, buy the cordless GBT4500 and accept what the cordless version costs you in weight, charging and a base station you must not lose. Most comparison pages in this category imply a performance gap between a corded scanner and its cordless twin. The published figures for these two do not show one.
Same engine, one decision
Datalogic builds the Gryphon 4500 family as a single platform with different tails. The GD4500 is the corded handheld, supplied with its interface cable and drawing power over that cable. The GBT4500 is the Bluetooth handheld, drawing power from an internal battery and talking to a base station that in turn connects to the host. Everything in front of the trigger is common to both.
That is worth stating clearly because the way scanner families are named and listed makes it easy to assume otherwise. Two model numbers that differ by two letters look like two products with two capability levels, and buyers reasonably expect the more expensive one to read better. Here it does not read better. It reads the same, from the same distance, at the same minimum bar width, and it survives the same drop. Reducing the decision to one variable makes it much easier to get right. Walk the process first. Stand where the operator stands, watch where the item is when it needs scanning, and count how many steps separate the two. If the answer is zero steps, the cable is free performance. If the answer is more than a couple of steps, or the item cannot be lifted at all, the cable is the constraint and the battery is worth managing.

Cordless is not free. It costs four things, and none of them appear on a specification sheet as a disadvantage.
Weight in the hand. The GBT4500 is 0.42 lbs against 0.34 lbs for the GD4500. That is a small absolute difference and an irrelevant one for a few hundred scans a day. It is not irrelevant for an operator holding the scanner through a full shift of continuous picking, where the difference is felt in the wrist rather than noticed on the scale. If you are specifying for high-repetition work, put both in the operator's hand before you commit.
A battery to manage. A 2,400 mAh Li-Ion cell is a consumable. It needs charging on a routine, it loses capacity over its life, and eventually it needs replacing. A corded scanner has none of that because it draws power from the host. This is a running cost and a process cost, not just a purchase decision.
A pairing to maintain. A Bluetooth scanner is bound to a base station. Swap the base, re-image the host, or mix units between benches and the pairing has to be re-established. It is a two-minute job when someone knows how, and a half-day support ticket when nobody does. Write the procedure down at deployment, not at the first failure.
A base station that is part of the product. This is the one that matters most when buying used. The base is where the scanner charges and where it connects to the host. A GBT4500 without its base is not a working scanner, it is a handset, and no amount of cabling turns it into a corded one. What corded gives you
The GD4500 has nothing to charge, nothing to pair, nothing to lose and no base to buy. It arrives with its interface cable, you plug it into the host, and it works. There is no second device on the counter, no charging routine to build into the shift handover, and no battery to replace in eighteen months.
For a fixed till, a packing bench or a goods-in desk where everything comes to the operator, corded is the right answer and it is the cheaper one, both at purchase and over the life of the unit. The cable is not a compromise in that setting. It is a power supply and a data link that never needs attention.
The common objection is cable reach at the counter, and it is usually a layout problem rather than a scanner problem. Before rejecting corded because the cable will not stretch, check whether the host can move, whether the scanner can be stand-mounted closer to the work, or whether the item can be brought a few inches further forward. A great many cordless purchases solve a problem that a repositioned monitor would have solved. When cordless genuinely pays
Cordless earns its cost in exactly one situation. The operator walks to the item rather than the item coming to the operator. Frame it as walking distance, not as convenience, and the decision becomes obvious in most operations.
Bulky or heavy goods. Anything that cannot be lifted to a fixed scanner has to be scanned where it sits. White goods, furniture, drums, long stock and anything on a pallet all fall here.
Stock counts along an aisle. Counting means moving continuously past shelf-edge and product labels. A cable makes that impossible regardless of how long it is.
Goods-in where the pallet stays on the floor. If the receiving process is to break down and check a pallet in place, the scanner goes to the pallet. Lifting cartons onto a bench to scan them and then back onto the pallet is work that exists only because of the cable.
Returns and service desks. Items arrive in trolleys, boxes and customer bags, and the fastest process is to scan them where they lie rather than unpack them onto the counter first.
If none of these describe your process, the cordless unit is buying you a capability you are not going to use while charging a battery you did not need.
The 100 metre figure, read honestly
The GBT4500 is recorded with Bluetooth 4.0 and a wireless range of up to 100 metres. That is a line-of-sight figure, measured with nothing between the handset and the base. Very few warehouses are line of sight.
Steel racking, stacked pallets, metal shutters, mesh cages, fluid-filled stock and the bodies of the people working the aisle all absorb and reflect 2.4 GHz signal. In practice the usable range in a racked aisle is a fraction of the open-field number, and it varies down the same aisle as the stock level changes. Plan on considerably less than the headline figure, and test in the actual aisle with the racking loaded before committing a fleet. A ten-minute walk test with one unit will tell you more than any specification sheet. The second half of this question is what happens when the scanner does go out of range. Bluetooth scanners of this type typically store scans locally and transmit them when the handset returns to range. The data is not lost, but it does not arrive in real time either, and that distinction matters. If your process relies on the host responding to each scan, for example a pick confirmation, a price lookup or a validation check, then a scan taken out of range gives the operator no feedback at the moment it is taken. If your process is a straight capture, such as a stock count posted at the end of a run, delayed transmission is harmless.
Decide which of those two your workflow is before deployment rather than after. Battery, in practical terms
The recorded figures are a 2,400 mAh Li-Ion cell and up to 60,000 scans. Take the scan count for what it is. It is a laboratory figure produced under controlled conditions, and it is useful for comparing one manufacturer's claim against another's rather than for predicting your Tuesday.
The real question is simpler. Does the shift end before the battery does? Answer that with your own numbers. Count the scans an operator actually takes in a shift, allow for the scanner sitting idle and waking repeatedly, and then decide whether the unit returns to its base at breaks or only at the end of the day. If the scanner sits on its base during every break, charging stops being a process you have to manage and becomes something that happens by itself. If it does not, you need either a charging routine in the shift handover or a second unit in rotation.
The other point is about buying used. A battery is a consumable, like a printhead or a tyre. It has a finite number of charge cycles in it and it loses capacity over its life whatever the listing says about the unit's condition. Treat the battery as a part you may need to replace, budget for it, and confirm it is a part you can still source before standardising a fleet on any cordless model. That is true of every cordless scanner on the market, including the rugged ones such as the Zebra DS3678. Where these specifications are genuinely strong
Having said that the two units read identically, it is worth saying that what they both read is better than the category norm in three specific ways.
3 mil minimum resolution. The minimum resolution figure is the narrowest bar the scanner can resolve. A 3 mil figure is finer than a typical retail scanner. For comparison, the Zebra DS2208 is a corded 2D scanner rated at 5 mil, while the Honeywell Xenon XP 1950g is corded at 3 mil. The difference shows up on small electronics labels, pharmacy and dispensing labels, laboratory sample labels and dense 2D codes printed small. If your codes are large retail UPCs on packaging, 5 mil is fine and you are paying for headroom you will not use. If your codes are small and tightly printed, 3 mil is the specification that decides whether the scan works first time or third time.
Up to 66 cm reading distance. This is a long reach for a general-purpose handheld. The Zebra DS2208 is recorded at up to 24 cm and the Honeywell Xenon XP 1950g at up to 42 cm. Sixty-six centimetres is the difference between reaching into a pallet to read a carton label and having to pull the carton out first, and between reading a label across a counter and asking the customer to pass the item over. It is also, quietly, an argument for the corded unit in some settings, because extra reach substitutes for some of the mobility people buy cordless to get.
Scan rate and motion tolerance. The GD4500 is recorded at up to 60 frames per second with motion tolerance up to 100 cm per second. These two numbers are what people mean when they say a scanner feels fast. Frames per second is how many looks the imager takes at the code each second, so a higher figure means more chances to get a clean decode before the operator notices any delay. Motion tolerance is how fast the item can be moving while the scanner reads it, so 100 cm per second means an operator can sweep a product across the field rather than stopping it square in front of the scanner. Together they remove the pause at the till, which is the single most visible difference between a good scanner and a merely adequate one.
Where neither of these is the right choice
Both units are rated to 1.8 m drop to concrete, which is a genuine business-grade figure and well beyond a consumer device. It is not a rugged rating.
For a cold store, a yard, a loading dock in the weather or any process where the scanner regularly goes off a forklift or a mezzanine, you want a sealed rugged unit. The Zebra DS3678 is a rugged cordless at 0.85 lbs with IP67 sealing and an 8 ft drop rating, and the Datalogic PowerScan PD9630 is a rugged corded unit at 0.95 lbs with IP65 and a 2.5 m drop rating. At the other extreme, a counter where items come to the operator continuously is presentation scanner work, not handheld work. If the operator is picking a handheld up and putting it down hundreds of times an hour, a fixed hands-free unit removes that motion entirely and scans faster for it. Interfaces, and which one to choose
The GD4500 is recorded with USB, RS-232 and keyboard wedge, with its interface cable included. The GBT4500 base station is recorded with USB and RS-232.
For almost every till, bench and desk, USB in keyboard emulation mode is the right choice. The host sees a keyboard, the scanned data arrives in whatever field the cursor is in, and there is no driver to install or maintain. It works with a web application, a legacy terminal emulator and a spreadsheet equally well, which is why it remains the default across the category.
RS-232 still matters in two places. The first is machinery and instrumentation that expects a serial stream, which is common on older weighing, labelling and production equipment that is not going to be replaced because you bought a scanner. The second is any application written against a serial port that needs the scanner to be addressable as a device rather than as a keyboard, typically because it needs to send configuration or receive status. Buying either of these used: three checks
Handheld imagers refurbish well. There is no consumable in the read path and no moving part in the optics, so a unit that reads cleanly today will generally keep reading cleanly. Three things decide whether a used listing is a working scanner or a box of parts.
The cable, on the corded unit. Interface cables are scanner-specific. They are not generic USB leads, and a GD4500 supplied without its cable needs the correct part sourced before it does anything at all. Confirm the cable is included and confirm it is the interface you need, because the same handset ships with USB, serial and wedge cables.
The base station and its cable, on the cordless unit. As above, and it is worth repeating because it is the most common gap in used cordless listings across this market. No base, no charging and no host connection.
The scan window. The window in front of the imager is the optic. Light scuffing is cosmetic and normal. Deep scratches across the window scatter light into the sensor and degrade read performance in exactly the conditions where it is hardest to diagnose, which is small codes at distance. Look at the window, not just the housing.
