Those five names map onto four different manufacturers' worlds. IPL and Direct Protocol are the Intermec command sets, native to this chassis and its lineage. ZSim2 emulates ZPL-II, which is the Zebra language and the one most warehouse and despatch systems emit by default. DSim handles DPL, the Datamax language. ESim handles EPL, the older Zebra desktop language that still turns up in shipping tools and legacy order systems that were written a long time ago and never revisited.
The commercial consequence is worth stating plainly, because it is the whole point. A printer that speaks all five can drop into a bench that is currently running Zebra formats, or Datamax formats, or EPL, or Intermec, without rewriting stored label formats and without changing what the host system emits. You do not have to open the order management system. You do not have to find whoever wrote the label templates. You do not have to retrain the despatch team on a new label layout. The printer adapts to the estate instead of the estate adapting to the printer.
That matters most in three situations. The first is a mixed fleet built up over years, where different benches print from different systems and nobody has ever standardised. The second is a straight replacement for a failed unit where the host software is fixed and the format library is large. The third is taking over an estate you did not build and do not yet understand, which is its own project. Compare that with a single-language printer. If the bench emits ZPL and the printer only understands its own native language, someone has to build a translation layer, change the driver, or rewrite every stored format. All three are real work, and all three introduce a window where labels print wrong and nobody notices until a pallet is in the wrong place.
What emulation does, and what it does not do
Here is the caveat, and it needs to come immediately after the benefit rather than buried at the bottom.
An emulation implements a command set. It does not reproduce another manufacturer's firmware exactly. ZSim2 understands ZPL-II commands and acts on them. It is not a Zebra printer wearing a different badge, and the difference shows up in specific, predictable places.
Label edges. Origin handling, margin defaults and how the printer treats content that runs past the media edge are firmware behaviours, not command definitions. A format that sat two dots inside the edge on the original printer can sit two dots outside it on the emulating one, which clips a barcode quiet zone and drops the read rate without ever looking obviously wrong. Resident fonts. Every manufacturer ships its own bitmap and scalable fonts with its own metrics. An emulation maps them to the nearest equivalent it has. Text that fitted a field on the original printer can wrap, truncate or overflow on the emulating one, particularly in fixed-width address blocks and description fields.
Deprecated and obscure commands. Long-lived format libraries accumulate commands that were normal when they were written. Emulations cover the working set, not every command that has ever existed. The ones that fall through usually fail silently rather than throwing an error.
Exact barcode module width. A narrow bar rendered at a slightly different module width is still a valid barcode, and it can still fall outside the tolerance your verifier or your customer's scanner expects. This is the failure that gets found at a customer's goods-in, not at yours.
None of this makes emulation a bad bet. It makes validation non-optional. Print your real label formats, from the real host, on the real media, and check them before you standardise a fleet on an emulation. This section deserves more space than it usually gets, because it is the single thing most likely to make a printer the wrong purchase.
The PC43d builds we hold are recorded with USB 2.0 Device and USB 2.0 Host only. There is no Ethernet on those builds. That is not a criticism of the printer, it is a description of the configuration, and it determines what the printer can and cannot do in your operation.
A USB-only printer belongs to the computer it is plugged into. Three things are therefore ruled out. It cannot sit on the network as a shared device with its own address. It cannot have several benches queueing to it, because there is only one host and the others have no path to it. And a warehouse management system, ERP or order platform cannot address it directly, because there is nothing on the network to address. Everything has to route through the attached workstation, which means that workstation has to be powered, logged in and sharing the printer for anyone else to print.
For a single bench with one PC, none of that matters and USB is the simpler arrangement: no address to manage, no DHCP reservation to forget, nothing to break after a power cut. There is a second point on this that causes genuine confusion. The USB Host port is a different thing from the USB Device port. The Device port is how the printer connects upstream to a computer. The Host port faces the other way: the printer is the host, and something else plugs into it. On printers of this class a Host port is variously used for keyboards, scanners, storage for firmware and format loading, or other peripherals, and exactly what a given unit supports depends on its build and firmware. The limit is durability. Direct thermal output fades with heat, light and abrasion, over weeks to months depending on the stock and the environment. No darkness setting alters that, because it is the chemistry of the coating rather than a print quality problem. A label left on a sunlit windowsill, on a warm pallet, or rubbing against other cartons in transit will degrade.
That makes the right applications easy to identify. Correct: despatch and carrier labels, picking labels, goods-in labels and returns labels. All are read within days, sometimes within hours, and then discarded. Wrong: asset tags, bin and rack location labels, and anything that has to be archived or stay legible for years. The PC43d is recorded with 128MB Flash and 128MB RAM. That is generous for a desktop printer, and the reason it is worth caring about is not abstract headroom.
There are two ways a label gets printed. In the first, the host composes the entire label, every field, every line, every barcode, and sends the whole thing to the printer on every single job. In the second, the label format lives on the printer, stored in Flash, and the host sends a short call to that format name plus the handful of variable values that change: the order number, the address, the SKU, the quantity.
The second approach is better for three reasons. It keeps traffic small, which matters on a busy network or a marginal link. It makes printing faster at volume, because there is less to transfer per label. And, most usefully, it keeps the label definition out of reach of a workstation change. When the label lives on the printer, nobody reimaging a PC, updating a driver or replacing a bench machine can silently alter what comes out. The format is where the printing happens.

Speed and darkness discipline
Up to 8 in/sec is fast for a desktop printer of this weight. It is also the setting that most often gets a printhead replaced early, and the mechanism is always the same.
Someone raises the speed to clear a backlog. Output looks light, because at higher speed each heating element has less dwell time on the label. So they raise the darkness to compensate. Higher darkness means more energy through each element, which shortens element life. The printer is now running fast and hot, and the printhead has become a consumable with a much shorter life than it was designed for.
The discipline is simple. Tune speed and darkness together, and fix the media first. Faint print is nearly always the media, the platen pressure or a dirty printhead, in that order, and turning the darkness up does not fix any of the three. It hides the symptom and bills you for it later in printhead replacements. The other thing worth checking before you reach for the speed control is whether you are actually running the right media handling mode. Buying checks on a used or refurbished unit
Desktop thermal printers refurbish well, because mechanically there is very little to go wrong. Almost all the wear concentrates in two parts, and the box contents are the third thing to nail down.
The printhead. It is a consumable rated in length of media printed, and it is the most expensive single component in the printer. A failing head prints a thin white line down the length of every label. That is burnt-out elements rather than dirt, and no amount of cleaning brings them back. The platen roller. The rubber roller underneath the media that drives it through. Flat spots, hardening and adhesive build-up cause tracking drift, skewed labels and inconsistent darkness across the label width. This is misdiagnosed as a printhead fault more often than anything else in thermal printing, and the roller is far cheaper to replace. Box contents, and the power supply in particular. Power supply, power cable, interface cable and media spindle go missing from used listings routinely across this market. A printer without its power supply is not a working printer, it is a printer plus an errand, and desktop thermal printers use specific supplies rather than a generic barrel plug.
