Hot-Swap vs Simple-Swap vs Fixed Drives: Which Fits

Hot-swap, simple-swap, non-hot-swap and fixed drives are different things, and buying the wrong one means a drive that either does not fit or cannot be replaced without downtime. This covers what each term means and how to tell which your server uses.

What is a hot-swap drive?

A drive that can be removed and replaced while the system is running.

That capability comes from three things working together: a backplane that the drive plugs into, a carrier that guides it in and latches it, and a controller that handles the drive appearing and disappearing without disruption.

The drive itself is usually a standard drive. What makes it hot-swap is the carrier and the bay it goes into. This is why a hot-swap drive sold under a server vendor part number includes the carrier β€” the carrier is what makes it hot-swap.

What is a non-hot-swap or fixed drive?

A drive mounted inside the chassis and cabled directly to the controller, with no backplane.

Replacing it means powering down, opening the case, and unplugging cables. It is cheaper β€” no backplane, no carrier β€” and it is common in entry-level servers, towers and workstations.

The drive itself is frequently identical to what goes in a hot-swap bay. The difference is entirely in the mounting. A non-hot-swap configuration cannot be converted to hot-swap by buying different drives; it needs a different chassis or backplane.

What does "simple-swap" mean?

A term used mainly by IBM and Lenovo, and a trap for buyers.

Simple-swap sits between the two. The drive is in a carrier and slides into a bay, so it looks like hot-swap. But the bay is not backed by a hot-swap backplane, so the system must be powered down to replace it.

How do I know if my server has hot-swap bays?

Four indicators.

Front-accessible bays with latches. If drives are visible from the front and each has a release lever, it is hot-swap or simple-swap.

Status LEDs on each bay. Hot-swap carriers usually carry activity and fault indicators. Simple-swap carriers often do not.

Can I use a bare drive in a hot-swap bay?

Only in a carrier.

A bare drive has no way to seat in a backplane bay. It needs the correct carrier for the chassis, and carrier generation must match. So a bare drive purchase means a separate carrier purchase, or a drive sold as a kit that includes one.

The reverse question also matters: can a drive from a hot-swap carrier be used as a fixed drive? Usually yes, once removed from the carrier β€” it is a standard drive. Which should I buy?

You do not choose. The chassis decides.

Hot-swap bays: buy drives in the correct carrier, or buy carriers separately. Confirm the generation.

Simple-swap bays: buy simple-swap drives specifically. Hot-swap parts will not fit.

Fixed internal: buy bare drives. No carrier needed. Confirm the mounting bracket and cable if adding rather than replacing.
