SFP-10G-SR Transceiver: Compatibility, Distance and Fixes
The SFP-10G-SR is a 10 gigabit short range optical transceiver, and it is one of the most ordered parts in networking. Most problems with it come from three questions people do not ask before buying.
What is an SFP-10G-SR transceiver?
A pluggable optical module that provides a 10 gigabit link over multi-mode fibre at short range, using an LC duplex connector.
SR stands for short range. It is designed for connections within a building β between racks, between floors, or from a rack to a nearby comms room. For longer distances a different module type is required.
Confirm the exact rated distance against the manufacturer specification for your part, since supported reach depends on the grade of multi-mode fibre in use and varies considerably between fibre types.
Will an SFP-10G-SR work in my switch?
The question that causes most returns, and the answer is: it depends on the coding.
Transceivers carry vendor identification in their firmware, and many switches check it. A module coded for one vendor may be rejected outright by another vendor's switch, and the link simply does not come up.
Three things worth knowing.
Behaviour varies by platform and software version. Some accept any module, some accept with a warning, some refuse. Do not assume based on what worked elsewhere.
Both ends have their own rules. Your switch and the device at the other end may each restrict what they accept β and some server network adapters are stricter than switches. Our X520 guide covers one well-known example.

Do both ends of the link need the same transceiver?
Yes, in type and wavelength.
An SR module must connect to another SR module. Mixing short range with long range, or different wavelengths, does not produce a working link β and the failure looks like a fault rather than a configuration error.
The vendor coding, however, does not need to match between the two ends. Each end only needs a module its own device accepts.
SFP-10G-SR vs direct attach copper: which should I use?
A cost question worth asking before ordering optics by default.
Direct attach copper is a single cable with transceivers permanently attached at both ends. For short runs within a rack or between adjacent racks it is cheaper and simpler than two optical modules plus a fibre patch lead.
Optical modules and fibre are needed once the distance exceeds what copper supports, or where you already have fibre installed.
Two practical notes. Direct attach cables are a fixed length, so plan the run before ordering. And they carry the same vendor coding restrictions as optics, which catches people who assumed the rules applied only to modules.
Why is my 10G link not coming up?
Five causes, in the order worth checking.
A dirty connector. This is the most common cause of optical link problems by a distance, and it is free to fix. Fibre end faces pick up contamination from handling and from dust caps, and a speck is enough. Clean before replacing anything β our fibre guide covers doing it properly.
Vendor coding rejection, per above. The switch log usually says something about an unsupported module.
Mismatched module types at the two ends.
Wrong fibre type. SR modules require multi-mode fibre and will not work over single-mode.
Transmit and receive reversed. A duplex fibre connected the wrong way round gives no link and no error message that says so.

How do I handle and store optical modules?
Four habits that prevent most problems.
Leave dust caps in until the moment of connection, and put them back when disconnecting.
Clean before connecting, every time, with proper cleaning tools rather than whatever is available.
Do not exceed the fibre bend radius. Fibre bent too tightly loses signal and can be permanently damaged, and the damage is invisible.
Hold spares. Transceivers are small, inexpensive relative to the link they carry, and a spare turns an outage into a swap. Where a link matters, hold a module for each end.
