Storage Array Drives vs Server Drives: MSA, PowerVault, NetApp
Storage arrays like the HPE MSA, Dell PowerVault and NetApp shelves take drives that look identical to server drives and are not the same parts. This is one of the most common ways an order comes back, and this covers why.
Why are storage array drives different from server drives?
Firmware, and what the array controller expects to see.
A storage array is a closed system. Its controllers are built to work with a specific set of drives running array-specific firmware, and they validate that firmware on every drive inserted. A drive with server firmware — even from the same manufacturer, same capacity, same interface — is reported as unsupported.
Three consequences.
The array vendor's drive part number is the one that matters. An HPE MSA drive has an MSA part number, distinct from the ProLiant part number for a physically similar drive.
Bare manufacturer drives are usually refused, even where they would work in a server behind an HBA.
Server-vendor drives are also refused. A ProLiant drive does not work in an MSA. A PowerEdge drive does not work in a PowerVault. Same vendor, different firmware.
Can I use a ProLiant drive in an HPE MSA?
No, and this is the single most common version of the mistake.
HPE sells drives for ProLiant servers and drives for MSA arrays under different part numbers, and the MSA controller reports a ProLiant drive as unsupported. The carriers also differ between MSA generations, so an MSA 2040 drive does not necessarily fit an MSA 2050 or 2060.

Can I use a PowerEdge drive in a Dell PowerVault?
It depends on the PowerVault.
The PowerVault line spans several product families. Some, like certain NX-series units, are effectively PowerEdge servers with storage software and take PowerEdge drives. Others, like the MD-series and ME-series arrays, have their own controllers and their own drive requirements.

What about NetApp, EMC and other arrays?
The same principle, more strictly applied.
NetApp, Dell EMC, IBM, Hitachi and similar arrays use drives with vendor-specific firmware and frequently vendor-specific sector formats — some use non-standard sector sizes that a normal drive does not support at all. The rule for any array: the drive must be the array vendor’s part number for that array family. Nothing else is reliable.
How do I identify the right drive for my array?
Four steps.
Identify the array model and generation exactly. The chassis label or management interface shows it.
Pull a working drive and photograph the label. It carries the array vendor part number, the carrier type and the firmware level. This is the single most useful thing you can send us. Our part numbers guide covers reading it.
Check the array’s compatibility matrix for that exact part number and your firmware level. Arrays sometimes require a controller firmware update to accept newer drives.
Confirm the carrier separately. Array carriers are array-specific and generation-specific, and a drive sold without one needs one sourced.
Why does this matter more on arrays than servers?
Because an array is usually the thing everything else depends on.
A server with a refused drive is one server down. An array with a refused drive is a failed rebuild on shared storage, with every system that uses it exposed. Our storage architecture guide covers why shared storage concentrates risk.
Two practical measures. Hold array spares on the shelf, in the correct part number, before you need them — our spares guide covers this. And keep the array firmware documented, since a drive that is compatible at one firmware level may not be at another.

Can I use a ProLiant drive in an HPE MSA array?

How do I find the right drive for my storage array?
