WD10EZEX WD Blue 1TB: Why It's Not a NAS or Server Drive
The WD10EZEX is a Western Digital Blue 1TB desktop drive, one of the most widely sold hard drives ever made, and it is frequently considered for uses it was not built for. This covers what it is, where it belongs, and what to use instead for servers and NAS.
What is the WDC WD10EZEX?
A 3.5 inch, 1TB, SATA 6Gb/s desktop hard drive from the WD Blue family. 7200 RPM class, conventional magnetic recording.
The full part number includes a suffix identifying the exact revision, for example WD10EZEX-08WN4A0. Revisions differ in cache size, platter count and firmware. Is the WD10EZEX CMR?
Yes, this part is conventional recording, which puts it ahead of some cheap desktop drives. But CMR alone does not make a drive suitable for an array.
Can I use the WD10EZEX in a NAS or server?
Better than an SMR drive, and still not recommended.
The reason is error recovery behaviour. A desktop drive that hits a difficult sector will retry for a long time, because on a desktop there is no other copy of the data and recovering it is worth the wait. In a RAID array the controller does have another copy, and a drive that stops responding is assumed to have failed and is dropped from the array. Two further points. Workload rating is for light intermittent use, not continuous operation. And vibration tolerance is low, so performance degrades in a multi-bay enclosure where drives shake each other.
Where the WD10EZEX is fine
A desktop PC, its intended role.
A boot or data drive in a workstation with backup elsewhere.
An external USB enclosure.
A single-drive system with no RAID, where the error recovery behaviour is actually the right behaviour.
What to use instead
