Enterprise hardware costs more in 2026 than the budgets written for it assumed, and the reasons are structural rather than a passing cycle. This covers what changed, why it is unlikely to reverse quickly, and what buyers can actually do about it.

What happened to hardware prices?

Two forces, working together.

Tariffs on imported technology hardware raised landed costs on equipment and components across the board.

AI infrastructure demand absorbed an enormous share of memory production. When hyperscale buyers commit to multi-year memory allocations, the commodity supply that everyone else buys from gets smaller, and prices rise for buyers who have no such agreements.

The important part for planning is that these are supply-side and policy-driven rather than demand spikes that resolve themselves. A procurement plan built on the pricing assumptions of a few years ago is working from the wrong baseline.

Why memory is worst affected

Memory is the component where AI demand and general-purpose server demand compete most directly for the same manufacturing capacity.

The consequence for anyone running older platforms: DDR4 supply is contracting while demand from the installed base continues. DDR4 servers are still everywhere — every Xeon Scalable first and second generation machine, every Gen10 ProLiant, every 14th and 15th generation PowerEdge. What this changes about buying

Four things.

What buyers can actually do

Five practical responses.

Buy spares for platforms you intend to keep. Especially memory and drives, where supply is tightest and part numbers are platform-specific.

An honest note on refurbished

Refurbished hardware is not automatically the answer. It is the right answer when the workload is served by the specification available, when the platform will still be supported for your intended life, and when you can verify condition properly.

Where new is still right: anything needing manufacturer warranty for compliance, anything on a long horizon where a current generation’s support runway matters, and anything where the power difference between generations outweighs the purchase saving.
