Dell WTJVC 960GB SATA SSD: Specs, Carrier and PowerEdge Fit

The Dell WTJVC is a 960GB 2.5-inch SATA 6Gb/s read-intensive solid state drive built for 14th generation PowerEdge servers. It is one of the most commonly searched Dell SSD part numbers on the secondary market, largely because 14G machines β€” the R640, R740 and R940 generation β€” are still everywhere and still need drives.

This guide covers what the WTJVC actually is, the carrier situation that trips up half the people who buy one, how it relates to the Dell order codes you will see next to it, and how to decide whether a read-intensive drive is right for what you are doing.

WTJVC at a glance

The part is consistently listed across the enterprise parts market as a Dell 960GB, 512n, MLC, SATA 6Gb/s, hot-plug, 2.5-inch small form factor read-intensive SSD for 14th generation PowerEdge servers. It appears as both WTJVC and 0WTJVC β€” the leading zero is a Dell numbering convention and does not indicate a different part.

The Dell order code is 400-ATLU. You will also see 400-AXSW on the same listings. Dell maintains separate number series for the drive itself and for the orderable SKU, which is why one physical drive turns up under several numbers. 512n means 512-byte native sectors. That is worth noticing if you are mixing drives in an existing array. A 512n drive and a 512e or 4Kn drive are not always interchangeable within the same virtual disk, and controllers differ in how strictly they enforce it. If you are expanding an array rather than building one, match the sector format of what is already there.

The carrier question

This is where most WTJVC purchases go wrong, and it is worth being blunt about it: a bare drive will not go into a PowerEdge bay. It needs the correct caddy.

Listings for the WTJVC frequently specify "w/DXD9H", which is the Dell carrier part number bundled with it. Others describe the drive as supplied with a 3.5-inch hybrid carrier, which is the adapter arrangement that lets a 2.5-inch drive occupy a large form factor bay. Those are two different physical outcomes, and which one you need depends entirely on your chassis.

Work out your bay type first. An R640 is a 2.5-inch SFF chassis. An R740 exists in both SFF and LFF configurations. An R740xd adds more bay options again. If your server has 3.5-inch bays and you buy a drive with a plain 2.5-inch caddy, it will not mount. If your server has 2.5-inch bays and you buy a drive already fitted into a 3.5-inch hybrid carrier, you will need to strip it back out.

Confirm the carrier is included before you buy. Sellers of pulled drives routinely keep the caddies, and a caddy bought separately often costs a meaningful fraction of the drive. Read-intensive: is it the right class?

Dell splits its SSD range into read-intensive, mixed-use and write-intensive classes, and the WTJVC is the read-intensive one. That is not a quality statement β€” it is a workload statement, and getting it wrong is expensive in a way that does not show up for a year or two.

A 1 DWPD rating means one full drive write per day across the warranty period. On a 960GB drive that is roughly 960GB of writes per day, every day, for five years. That is a lot for most workloads and nowhere near enough for some.

Read-intensive is right for: boot and OS volumes, VM datastores where the guests are mostly reading, web and application servers, read-heavy databases, content repositories, and anything where the data is written once and served many times.

Read-intensive is wrong for: write-heavy transactional databases, busy logging or telemetry targets, video surveillance recording, caching tiers that constantly rewrite, and any all-flash array doing heavy data reduction where write amplification multiplies the host write load. Those want mixed-use at minimum.

Does Dell firmware matter here?

Yes, more than people expect. A Dell-badged drive carries Dell firmware, and that is what allows the PERC controller and iDRAC to report the drive's identity, health and wear correctly. Put a generic SATA SSD of identical capacity into the same bay and it may work, but iDRAC will commonly flag it as a non-certified drive, predictive failure reporting may not function, and on some configurations the controller will refuse to use it in a virtual disk at all.

For a production PowerEdge under warranty or support contract, source the Dell part. For a lab box on an HBA in IT mode, the constraint largely disappears. Buying a used WTJVC

Enterprise read-intensive drives are usually retired with most of their endurance unused, so a pulled WTJVC is often a genuinely good buy. But "often" is not "always", and the drive itself will tell you which one you have.

Ask for the SMART data before it ships. Media wearout indicator, power-on hours and total bytes written are the three numbers that matter. A drive with 45,000 power-on hours and a wearout indicator in the twenties is near the end of its useful life regardless of how it looks. Check the firmware revision. Dell publishes firmware updates for its SSDs, and a drive pulled from a machine that was never patched may be several revisions behind. That is fixable, but you want to know before you put it in a production array.

Do not mix wildly different wear levels in one array. If you are adding one drive to an existing RAID set, a drive with similar hours is a safer neighbour than a brand new one or a heavily used one.

Read-intensive means the drive is provisioned for workloads that read far more than they write. A 1 DWPD rating allows roughly one full capacity of writes per day for the rated life, which on a 960GB drive is about 960GB daily. That is comfortable for boot volumes, VM datastores, web and application servers and read-heavy databases. It is not enough for write-heavy transactional databases, busy logging targets, surveillance recording or caching tiers β€” those need mixed-use drives at minimum.

Can I use a generic 960GB SATA SSD instead?

Sometimes it works, but you lose things. Dell firmware is what lets the PERC controller and iDRAC report drive identity, health and wear correctly. With a generic drive, iDRAC will commonly flag it as non-certified, predictive failure reporting may stop working, and some controller configurations will refuse to build a virtual disk on it. For a production server under support, use the Dell part. For a lab machine on an HBA in IT mode, a generic drive is usually fine.

Is a used WTJVC safe to buy?

Usually, because read-intensive enterprise drives are rarely retired with their endurance exhausted β€” they are retired because the server was refreshed. The way to be sure is to ask for the drive's own telemetry before it ships: media wearout indicator, power-on hours and total bytes written. Those three numbers tell you exactly how much life is left. Treat a condition grade offered without them as unverified.
