POS Receipt Printers: Thermal vs Impact Buying Guide
Almost every receipt printer sold today is direct thermal. It is quiet, it has one moving consumable, and it prints a receipt in a second or two. So the obvious conclusion is that impact printers are legacy hardware still on the shelf because nobody has cleared them out.
That conclusion is wrong, and it is the single most common mistake made when replacing a till printer. Impact receipt printers such as the Epson TM-U220 and the Bixolon SRP-275III are still bought new, deliberately, for two jobs that thermal printing cannot do at all. This guide covers how to choose between the two, and then the four specifications that actually decide whether a printer works on your counter.
Thermal or impact: the first decision, and it is not about age
A direct thermal printer has no ink and no ribbon. A heated printhead darkens chemically coated paper as it passes underneath. That is why the mechanism is fast and near silent, and why the only consumable is the paper roll itself. The Epson TM-T88VII is quoted at up to 500 mm/sec, which is 19.7 inches per second, at 180 dpi on 80 mm paper. The Epson TM-m30III and the Star Micronics TSP143IV are quoted at up to 250 mm/sec, or 9.8 inches per second, at 203 dpi.
An impact printer works the opposite way. A 9-pin head strikes a ribbon against plain paper to form characters mechanically. The Epson TM-U220 is quoted at up to 6 lines per second on 76 mm paper. The Bixolon SRP-275III is quoted at up to 5 lines per second, also on 76 mm paper. Comparing 500 mm/sec against 6 lines per second is comparing two different units, which is itself the honest answer: an impact printer is measured in lines because it builds a receipt line by line, and it is slower than any thermal unit on this page by a wide margin. It is also audibly louder, because striking is a mechanical action rather than a thermal one.
So why does anyone still specify one? Two reasons, and neither has anything to do with the hardware being old.
Heat and grease. Thermal paper is coated to darken when heated. A kitchen pass, a fryer station or a hot pizza line is an environment full of exactly the thing that triggers that coating. Thermal rolls stored or used near heat go grey, curl, and in bad cases print an unreadable receipt straight out of the printer. Grease and steam compound it. An impact printer strikes a ribbon onto ordinary uncoated paper, so heat does nothing to it. That is why the kitchen order printer in a restaurant is very often an impact unit while the front counter printer is thermal.
Multi-part paper. An impact head strikes hard enough to mark a second, carbonless layer beneath the first. That gives you two copies in one pass: one for the customer, one that stays behind for the till, the kitchen, the driver or the audit file. No thermal printer can do this at any speed or resolution, because nothing is being struck. If your workflow needs a copy to remain in the building, impact is not a preference, it is the requirement.

Two entries are worth expanding. The TM-m30III is also recorded here as part C11CJ63203, a 3 inch unit at 250 mm/sec with Ethernet, supplied new. The TSP143IV is recorded as part TSP143IV-UE. Part suffixes on receipt printers carry the interface, so quoting the suffix rather than the family name is what stops the wrong interface arriving. Three widths cover essentially the whole category, and they are not interchangeable.
80 mm, quoted as 3.15 inch, is the counter standard. The TM-T88VII, the TM-m30III and the TSP143IV-UE all take it. If you are buying a thermal printer for a shop, bar or restaurant front counter, this is almost certainly the roll you already stock.
76 mm, quoted as 3 inch, is the impact standard. The TM-U220 and the SRP-275III both take it. The four millimetre difference sounds trivial and is not: a roll that is too wide will not fit the holder, and a roll that is too narrow leaves the print running off the edge or the paper sensor unhappy. The Bixolon SRP-Q302 and SRP-S300 are both recorded at 3 inch.
58 mm, quoted as 2.28 inch, is the mobile standard. The Epson TM-P20II, Bixolon SPP-R200III and Star Micronics SM-S230i all use it. Nothing on a counter uses it.
Paper is the only thing you will buy repeatedly for a thermal printer, so the width you standardise on has an ongoing cost attached. The operational failure mode is simple and irritating: somebody swaps a printer, nobody checks the width, and on the first busy morning the stockroom has a hundred rolls that will not load. Confirm the width against the unit being replaced before ordering, and if you run several sites, standardise deliberately rather than by accident. The cash drawer port, which is the specification people forget
This one costs more installations than any other line on the datasheet, because it is invisible until the till opens for the first time.
On a standard point of sale counter, the cash drawer is not connected to the computer. It is connected to the printer. The printer carries a drawer kick port, and the till software sends a command to the printer, which then fires the solenoid that pops the drawer. The port is physically an RJ-11 socket on most units here, and the TSP143IV is recorded as RJ-11/12. It looks like a telephone socket, and it is not one.
The TM-T88VII, TM-m30III, TSP143IV, TM-U220 and SRP-275III all carry a cash drawer port. The practical consequence is that if you replace a printer with one that has no drawer port, or you forget to move the drawer cable across, the drawer stops opening on day one and every transaction needs a manual key. Staff will report this as the new till being broken, and the actual cause is a cable that never got plugged in.
Two checks before you order a replacement. First, confirm the incoming printer has a drawer port at all. Second, confirm the drawer itself is a standard kick drawer rather than something wired directly to a controller, because that changes the answer. On the Bixolon SRP-Q302 and SRP-S300 the drawer port should be confirmed on the unit rather than assumed.
Speed is a queue decision, not a vanity number
The gap between up to 250 mm/sec and up to 500 mm/sec looks like a spec sheet argument until you stand behind a counter at lunchtime.
What matters is whether the receipt is finished before the next customer is served. If your queue moves in bursts, a card payment authorises, the receipt prints, the customer takes it and steps away, and the next transaction starts. At peak, the printer is part of that cycle and the seconds compound. On a counter running a genuine rush, the TM-T88VII at up to 500 mm/sec finishes a long receipt visibly sooner than a 250 mm/sec unit, and the queue moves.
On a quiet counter it changes nothing at all. A pharmacy, a service desk, a trade counter or a small shop serving a handful of customers an hour will never notice the difference, and paying for the faster unit buys nothing operational. The same logic applies to receipt length: a two line parking receipt is fast on any of these printers, while a long itemised grocery receipt with promotions and a survey footer is where speed shows.
Impact printers sit outside this comparison entirely. Up to 6 lines per second on the TM-U220 is not a front counter speed for long receipts, and that is accepted as the trade for the two capabilities impact has that thermal does not. In practice this is why a restaurant runs both: thermal at the front, impact in the kitchen. Resolution on a receipt, and the one case where it matters
The TM-T88VII is 180 dpi, quoted as 180 by 180 dots per inch. The TM-m30III and the TSP143IV are 203 dpi. The mobile units are 203 dpi.
For ordinary receipt text this difference is close to irrelevant. Receipt fonts are large, the paper is narrow, and a customer reads the total and the date. Nobody has ever rejected a receipt printer because the line items looked slightly coarse. Character set support tends to matter more in practice than dot count: the TM-T88VII is recorded with ANK, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Thai character sets, which is the kind of detail that decides whether a receipt prints correctly for your customers at all.
There is one exception, and it is worth taking seriously. If you print a barcode or a QR code on the receipt, for returns, loyalty enrolment, order collection or payment, then the code has to scan reliably at whatever size your receipt layout allows. That is a function of resolution, print darkness, paper quality and the scanner doing the reading, and no datasheet answers it. Print a real sample on your real paper with your real layout, and scan it with the device that will actually be used, before you commit a fleet to a model. Thermal receipts fade, and that is a records problem
Thermal print is a chemical reaction in a coating, and the same chemistry that makes it print makes it disappear. A thermal receipt left in a wallet, a glovebox or a warm car can become unreadable, and there is no printer setting that changes it. Friction, sunlight and heat all accelerate it.
For a coffee shop receipt this is nobody's problem. It becomes a problem the moment a legible copy has to survive: warranty documentation, expense claims, proof of delivery, regulated records, or anything that gets filed and retrieved months later. If that describes your workflow, you have two honest options. Print to impact on multi-part paper so a durable copy stays behind at the point of sale, or issue a digital receipt and treat the paper one as disposable. What does not work is assuming a thermal receipt in a filing box will still be readable at the end of a retention period.

Linerless media
The Bixolon SRP-S300 is a direct thermal linerless unit at 3 inch, with USB and Ethernet, supplied refurbished. Linerless media has no silicone backing to peel off and discard, which removes the waste stream and puts more usable length on a roll of the same diameter. It is used for receipts that double as labels, which is common in food ordering, collection and delivery workflows.

Mobile receipt printers are a separate class
The Epson TM-P20II, Bixolon SPP-R200III and Star Micronics SM-S230i are all direct thermal at 203 dpi on 58 mm paper, and all weigh 0.55 lbs. They are worn on a belt or carried in a hand, and they exist for queue busting, table service, delivery, market stalls, field service and mobile ticketing.
They are not counter printers and should not be bought as cheap ones. The 58 mm paper is a different roll from everything on your counter, the printing is slower than a mains counter unit, and the whole design assumes a battery and a wireless link rather than a fixed cable and a cash drawer. Keeping them running
Receipt printers fail in predictable ways, and most of the calls are not hardware faults.
Faint or patchy thermal print is usually paper or a dirty printhead before it is a failing head. Cheap thermal stock with a poor coating prints grey on a healthy printer. A clean head and a decent roll fix the majority of these reports. A hard vertical white line down every receipt is different: that is element failure, and cleaning will not recover it. Impact print going faint is a ribbon at the end of its life, which is a consumable swap rather than a fault. Impact units carry a receive buffer, recorded as 4KB on the TM-U220 and 32KB on the SRP-275III, and a larger buffer helps when the till sends jobs faster than the mechanism prints them.
Printer stops receiving jobs is nearly always the interface rather than the printer. A networked unit that changes address after a power cut looks exactly like dead hardware. Give network printers a reservation or a static address and record which counter each one serves. The TM-T88VII, TM-m30III and TSP143IV are each recorded with 4MB of non-volatile memory, which is where logos and stored graphics live. If you are moving branding across from an old unit, that content has to be loaded onto the new one, and it is a routine step that gets forgotten on swap day.
