SK hynix SSD Guide: Enterprise and Consumer Solid State Drives

An SK hynix SSD sits in a slightly awkward place in most buyers' heads. The company is one of the three big memory manufacturers on earth, it makes its own NAND, and its drives ship inside servers and laptops from vendors who rarely put the hynix name on the outside. So people meet the brand through a part number on a pulled drive rather than through a product page, and then struggle to work out what class of drive they are actually holding.

This guide lays out the SK hynix solid state drive families that matter for enterprise and workstation buyers, explains how the Solidigm acquisition changed the picture, and gives you a way to identify an unmarked hynix drive before you commit it to an array.

Who SK hynix is in the SSD market

SK hynix is a Korean semiconductor manufacturer and one of the small group of companies that fabricates NAND flash rather than buying it. That matters commercially: a vendor who owns the fab controls supply, controls binning, and can put a drive into volume production without waiting on a third party. It is the same structural advantage Samsung, Micron and Kioxia have, and it is why hynix drives turn up as OEM fitments in servers from multiple vendors at once.

The Solidigm acquisition reshaped the portfolio. SK hynix agreed in 2020 to buy Intel's NAND and SSD business for roughly $9 billion. The first phase closed in December 2021, creating Solidigm as a subsidiary, and the deal completed with a final payment of about $1.9 billion, giving SK hynix full control of the former Intel flash operation. In practice this means the modern SK hynix group covers two datacenter SSD lineages: the hynix-branded PE, PS and PEB families, and the Solidigm D5/D7 families that descend from Intel's DC P and D series. If you are replacing an Intel DC drive, the successor part is Solidigm-branded, not hynix-branded.

Enterprise SK hynix SSD families

The enterprise drives are the ones most likely to arrive in your rack, usually as an OEM part with a Dell, HPE or Lenovo label on the caddy and a hynix model number on the drive itself.

PE8000 series β€” PCIe Gen4 NVMe. The PE8010 and PE8030 were SK hynix's first Gen4 enterprise NVMe drives. Both use the 2.5-inch U.2 form factor and 96-layer TLC flash, span roughly 1TB to 8TB, and are rated at up to 6,500 MB/s sequential read and 3,700 MB/s sequential write, with up to 1,100,000 random read IOPS and 320,000 random write IOPS. Maximum power draw is 17W. The split between the two models is the usual endurance split: the PE8010 is positioned for read-intensive workloads and the PE8030 for mixed read and write. SK hynix did not publish full datasheets with DWPD figures at launch, so if endurance class matters for your workload, get the figure from the OEM's own spec sheet for the badged part rather than assuming.

PEB110 β€” PCIe Gen5 in E1.S. The PEB110 is the Gen5 datacenter drive built for dense storage servers. SK hynix states 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities, 238-layer 4D NAND, transfer rates up to 32 GT/s, roughly double the performance of the previous generation, and more than 30% better power efficiency than its predecessor. It supports the SPDM security protocol and conforms to OCP version 2.5. The E1.S form factor is the giveaway that this is a hyperscale-oriented part rather than something you retrofit into a general-purpose 2U server.

PS1010 and PS1030. These are the Gen5 datacenter families shown in E3.S alongside the company's newer NAND generations. They occupy the same read-intensive and mixed-use split as the PE8000 pair, one generation on. Treat published third-party performance figures for these with care and confirm against the OEM spec sheet for whatever badged part you are actually buying.

Consumer and client SK hynix SSDs

The retail lineup is small and deliberately so. The Platinum P41 is the PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 flagship, sold in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. The Gold P31 is the PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drive in the same capacity range, and it built a reputation on unusually low power draw for its class, which is why it turns up in laptop upgrade recommendations more often than its market share would suggest. The Beetle X31 is the portable external SSD.

Separately, hynix client drives such as the BC and PC series ship inside OEM laptops and small-form-factor desktops. These are not sold at retail and their specifications vary by the OEM contract, so a BC711 pulled from one vendor's machine is not automatically identical to one pulled from another's.

Telling an enterprise hynix drive from a client one

This is where most procurement mistakes happen, and it is the same mistake people make with Samsung PM-series client drives: a drive pulled from a server chassis is not necessarily an enterprise drive.

Check the form factor first. A U.2, U.3 or EDSFF drive is enterprise by definition. An M.2 2280 drive may be either β€” servers legitimately use M.2 for boot media. Our guide to NVMe form factors covers which physical formats belong where.

Then check for power loss protection. Enterprise drives carry capacitors that let in-flight writes complete when power drops. Client drives do not. On a bare drive you can often see the capacitor bank on the PCB. Without PLP, a drive has no business holding a database write cache regardless of how fast it benchmarks.

Then check endurance class. A read-intensive enterprise drive typically sits around 1 DWPD and a mixed-use drive around 3 DWPD, while client drives are rated in TBW terms that work out far lower under sustained server load. OEM firmware and why the badge matters

An SK hynix drive sold as a Dell, HPE or Lenovo part carries OEM firmware and an OEM part number. That firmware affects how the drive reports itself to the RAID controller or HBA, whether the server's management controller will show health and wear data, and in some cases whether the system will flag the drive as unsupported at all. A generic hynix-branded drive with the same model number and capacity is not always a drop-in for a badged one.

Where SSDs beat spinning disk, and where they do not

Flash is not automatically the right answer. For capacity-led nearline storage, high-capacity SAS and SATA hard drives still cost dramatically less per terabyte, and the performance difference does not matter if the workload is sequential. For anything latency-sensitive β€” virtualisation hosts, databases, busy file servers β€” flash wins decisively. Buying used and refurbished hynix drives

Because hynix drives ship overwhelmingly as OEM fitments, a large share of the secondary market supply is pulled stock. That is not a problem in itself β€” enterprise flash is usually retired with most of its endurance intact β€” but it does mean you should read the drive's own wear indicators rather than trusting a condition grade alone. Percentage used, data units written and power-on hours are all reported over NVMe and are the honest record of what the drive has done. Common questions

Is an SK hynix SSD good for enterprise use?

The enterprise families are, yes. The PE8000, PS1000 and PEB110 series are purpose-built datacenter drives with power loss protection and enterprise endurance ratings, and they ship as OEM fitments in servers from multiple major vendors. The client families β€” the BC and PC series, and the retail Gold and Platinum drives β€” are not enterprise parts and should not be used as primary storage in a server, regardless of how they benchmark.

What is the difference between the PE8010 and the PE8030?

They share the same platform β€” PCIe Gen4, 2.5-inch U.2, 96-layer TLC, up to 6,500 MB/s read and 3,700 MB/s write, and up to 1.1 million random read IOPS β€” and differ in endurance positioning. The PE8010 is the read-intensive model and the PE8030 is the mixed-use model, which means the PE8030 carries more over-provisioned spare area and tolerates a heavier daily write load. Confirm the exact DWPD rating from the datasheet for the specific badged part, because SK hynix did not publish full endurance figures at launch.

Is Solidigm the same company as SK hynix?

Solidigm is a subsidiary of SK hynix, formed from Intel's NAND and SSD business after SK hynix acquired it in a deal worth around $9 billion. The first phase closed in December 2021 and the transaction completed later with a final payment of roughly $1.9 billion. The two brands remain separate in the market: Solidigm continues the former Intel D5 and D7 datacenter lines, while SK hynix-branded drives continue the PE, PS and PEB families. If you are replacing an Intel DC P-series drive, the modern equivalent is a Solidigm part.

Can I use a hynix SSD pulled from a Dell server in an HPE server?

Physically, if the form factor and interface match and you transfer it into the right carrier, it will fit. Whether it works cleanly is a different question. A Dell-badged drive carries Dell firmware and a Dell part number, and an HPE controller may flag it as unsupported, decline to report wear data, or refuse to include it in an array depending on the platform and firmware level. On a plain HBA in IT mode it will usually just work. On a vendor RAID controller enforcing a compatibility list, source the correctly badged part.

How do I check how much life is left in a used hynix SSD?

Read the drive's own telemetry. Over NVMe, the SMART log exposes percentage used, data units written, power-on hours and available spare. Percentage used is the most direct indicator: it counts up toward 100 as the drive consumes its rated endurance. Data units written lets you cross-check that figure against the drive's TBW rating. Ask any supplier of used flash to provide these readings before shipping, and be wary of a condition grade offered without them.

What is the PEB110 and should I be specifying it?

The PEB110 is SK hynix's PCIe Gen5 datacenter SSD in the E1.S form factor, available in 2TB, 4TB and 8TB, built on 238-layer 4D NAND, rated up to 32 GT/s with more than 30% better power efficiency than the previous generation. E1.S is a hyperscale and dense-storage form factor rather than a general-purpose one, so it is the right specification only if your chassis takes E1.S. For a conventional 2U server you want U.2 or U.3 instead.
