Honeywell PX940 Industrial Label Printer: A vs V and Buying Guide

There is one question worth settling before anything else about this printer, because getting it wrong is an expensive mistake and the model names are only one letter apart.

The Honeywell PX940 comes in two forms. The PX940V has an integrated barcode verifier built into the print mechanism, which inspects every label as it is produced. The PX940A is the same industrial printer without that verifier. Both units listed here are PX940A: 4-inch industrial thermal transfer printers at 203 dpi and 300 dpi, weighing 50.7 lbs, supplied refurbished and function-tested.

If you are buying this model specifically for inline verification, you need the V. If you are buying a heavy-duty 4-inch industrial printer, the A is what you want and you should not pay the verification premium.

What the integrated verifier does, and who needs it

A barcode verifier is not a scanner. A scanner tells you whether a code can be read right now, by that scanner, at that angle. A verifier grades the code against a published quality standard and reports a letter grade, which is what a customer or an auditor asks for.

On the PX940V the verifier sits immediately after the printhead, so it inspects the label at the moment of printing rather than at a separate station. A failed code is voided and reprinted automatically, and the grade is logged. Nothing below the threshold leaves the printer.

That matters in three situations. Automotive and aerospace suppliers whose customers specify a minimum barcode grade in the contract. Pharmaceutical and medical device serialisation, where a failed code is a compliance event rather than an inconvenience. And any retail supplier operating under chargeback terms, where an unscannable pallet label at the receiving dock becomes a line-item deduction.

Choosing between the 203 dpi and 300 dpi units

This is the decision most buyers actually face, and higher is not automatically better.

203 dpi is correct for shipping labels, carton and case marking, pallet placards, and standard linear barcodes at normal sizes. It prints faster at a given speed setting and consumes printhead life more slowly, because fewer heating elements fire per inch of media. For the great majority of warehouse and distribution labelling it is the right specification and the cheaper one.

300 dpi earns its price when you are printing small 2D codes such as DataMatrix on component-level labels, regulatory or pharmaceutical text at small point sizes, fine graphics or logos, or dense codes that have to fit a physically small label. The extra resolution is what makes a small code scannable rather than marginal.

The 300 dpi unit listed also supports direct thermal as well as thermal transfer, which gives you the option of running ribbon-free stock for short-life labels on the same printer. That flexibility is worth something if your label mix genuinely spans both.

50.7 lbs, and what that weight is doing

A desktop label printer weighs three to five pounds. This one weighs more than fifty, and the mass is not incidental.

An all-metal chassis holds the printhead in precise, constant alignment with the platen roller while the head heats and cools tens of thousands of times a day. A lighter plastic frame flexes and creeps under that cycling, and print quality drifts across a shift. On low volumes nobody notices. On a printer producing thousands of labels a day, it is the difference between one that holds calibration for months and one needing adjustment weekly.

The same construction is what lets the printer live on a dock or a production line and absorb knocks, vibration and dust without moving out of alignment.

The practical consequences are worth planning for. It needs a proper bench or stand rated for the weight, it is a two-person lift, and siting it somewhere awkward now is a problem every time it needs media. Thermal transfer, and getting the ribbon right

These units print thermal transfer, which means a ribbon carries the image onto the label rather than heat darkening the media directly. That is the correct method when labels have to survive: asset tags, outdoor or warehouse storage, chemical exposure, or anything with a life measured in years rather than weeks.

The part that causes the most trouble is ribbon and label pairing, and it is genuinely unforgiving. Wax ribbons suit paper labels and general indoor use. Wax-resin handles more abrasion and suits coated papers and some synthetics. Full resin is what you need for synthetic labels, chemical resistance and outdoor life.

Two mistakes recur. Using a wax ribbon on a synthetic label produces output that wipes off with a thumb. And using a ribbon narrower than the label lets the printhead run directly against the abrasive label edge, which destroys the head far faster than normal wear. Always run a ribbon at least as wide as the media.

Buying a refurbished industrial printer: what to ask

Industrial printers refurbish well because the chassis is built for a service life far longer than most sites keep them. The wear items are predictable, so ask about them by name.

Printhead life. This is the number that decides the real value. A printhead is a consumable rated in length of media printed, and a replacement costs a meaningful fraction of the printer. Ask whether the head has been replaced and what condition it is in.

Platen roller and drive components. A worn platen causes tracking and print quality problems that look like printhead faults and are often misdiagnosed as such.

What is in the box. Power supplies, cables, media spindles and any cutter or peeler are routinely missing from refurbished listings across this market. A printer without its power supply is not a working printer.

Where the PX940A fits

It is over-specified for a shipping desk, a retail back room or a clinic. And if the reason you are looking at a PX940 is contractual barcode grading, the A variant does not provide it and you should be quoting the V instead.
