What is the Samsung M321R8GA0PB0-CWM?

A 64GB DDR5 registered ECC DIMM (RDIMM) for servers. The Samsung part number encodes the specification:

M321 identifies a DDR5 registered module. R8GA0PB0 encodes the 64GB capacity and organisation. CWM is the speed grade suffix.

The suffix is the part that matters, because Samsung ships 64GB DDR5 RDIMMs at several speed grades under otherwise identical numbers. Which servers take DDR5 RDIMMs?

Current-generation platforms: Intel Xeon Scalable 4th generation and later, and AMD EPYC 9004 series and later. Earlier platforms use DDR4 and the two are not interchangeable in any direction — different slots, different signalling, different voltage.

Speed grade: what happens if it does not match

Two rules.

A channel runs at the speed of its slowest module. Mixing speed grades drops everything in that channel to the lowest.

The processor caps the maximum. A faster module in a machine whose processor supports a lower speed runs at the processor’s ceiling. On Xeon Scalable the tier (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) sets that ceiling — our Xeon tier guide covers this.

So buying a faster grade than the platform supports wastes money, and mixing grades wastes the faster modules.

DDR5 on-die ECC is not module ECC

A point that confuses buyers and is worth stating plainly.

All DDR5 has on-die ECC, which corrects errors inside the memory chip itself. That is a manufacturing necessity at DDR5 densities, and it is present on consumer DDR5 too.

Module-level ECC is different: extra chips that let the memory controller detect and correct errors across the whole module, and report them. That is what a server needs, and it is what the R in RDIMM comes with.

A consumer DDR5 module with on-die ECC is not ECC memory in the sense a server requires. Our ECC guide covers the distinction.

What to check before buying

Five things.

Speed grade suffix matches what your platform supports and what is already installed.

RDIMM, not UDIMM or LRDIMM. These cannot be mixed. Our module types guide covers the difference.

No. Registered and load-reduced modules cannot be mixed in one machine. Match what is already installed.
