Small businesses usually arrive at barcode printing sideways. Someone buys inventory or asset tracking software, discovers it needs labels, and then has to buy a printer without ever having specified one before.

The Wasp WPL305 is the printer that most often ends up in that slot. It prints a 4-inch wide label at 203 dpi in both thermal transfer and direct thermal, connects over USB, serial and parallel, and weighs 7 lbs. It is supplied here as part WPL305E in refurbished, function-tested condition.

Dual mode is the reason this printer suits small operations

Most desktop label printers do one thing: either direct thermal or thermal transfer. This one does both, and for a business with a single printer that is genuinely useful rather than a marketing line.

Run it in direct thermal and there is no ribbon. Heat darkens the coated label directly, roll changes take seconds and running costs are lower. That is correct for shipping labels, pick labels and anything consumed within days or weeks.

Load a ribbon and run it in thermal transfer and the output lasts years instead of months. That is what asset tags, shelf and bin location labels, equipment identification and anything stored long term actually need, because direct thermal output fades with heat and light.

A small business typically needs both and cannot justify two printers. A warehouse printing despatch labels in the morning and asset tags in the afternoon runs direct thermal for one and loads a ribbon for the other. The one thing to plan for is that switching modes is a media change, not a menu setting: you change the label stock as well as loading or removing the ribbon. If you switch several times a day that friction adds up, and two printers becomes the better answer.

A parallel port in 2026, and why it is still here

USB, serial and parallel are all fitted. Most buyers will use USB and ignore the rest, but the other two exist for real reasons worth knowing.

Parallel is there for legacy hosts. Industrial control systems, weighing equipment, older label applicators and long-lived line-of-business applications sometimes drive a printer over a parallel port and have no route to USB. If that describes a machine on your floor, this port is the reason you can replace its printer without replacing the system around it.

Serial covers a similar case and is still common on scales, test equipment and embedded controllers.

USB is what you should use for anything modern. Plug it into the PC running your label software, install the driver, done.

What none of these give you is network printing. If several people need to send to this printer, or it is not next to the PC that drives it, you will want an Ethernet-capable unit instead. Buying a Wasp printer without buying into Wasp

Wasp Barcode Technologies sells complete systems to small and mid-sized businesses: inventory tracking, asset tracking and the hardware to go with it. Many WPL printers arrive as part of one of those bundles, which is why you will often find this model in a business that never chose a printer brand at all.

Two practical points follow.

If you already run Wasp software, a matching printer is the path of least resistance. The label templates, the driver and the documentation are all built around it, and support conversations are simpler when the hardware matches.

If you do not run Wasp software, this is still an ordinary desktop label printer. It installs with a Windows driver and prints from any label design application or from a shipping platform, the same as any other. You are not locked into an ecosystem by buying the hardware.

7 lbs: where this sits

Weight is a reliable proxy for build and duty cycle on a thermal printer, because it tells you how much metal is holding the printhead in alignment with the platen.

At 7 lbs the WPL305 is solidly in the desktop class but at the heavier end of it, which generally means a sturdier media path than the lightest units. It will handle a few hundred to a couple of thousand labels a day without complaint.

Where the WPL305 fits

Small warehouse and stockroom operations. A single printer covering despatch labels, bin locations and asset tags because the volume does not justify two.

Small manufacturers. Work-in-progress tags, finished goods labels and part identification.

Legacy host replacement. Sites with a parallel or serial connected printer that has failed and a host system nobody wants to touch.

It is the wrong printer for continuous high-volume production, for network printing shared across several users, and for anything needing 300 dpi small-code or fine-text printing.

Refurbished: what to check

Desktop thermal printers refurbish well, and the wear is concentrated in two parts.

The printhead is a consumable rated in length of media printed and the most expensive single component. A failing head prints a thin white line down the length of every label, which is burnt-out elements rather than dirt. Ask whether it has been replaced and what condition it is in.

The platen roller drives the media. Wear or flat spots cause tracking drift and inconsistent darkness, and these get misdiagnosed as printhead problems more often than anything else in thermal printing.

Then confirm the box contents. Power supply, cables and media spindles are commonly missing from refurbished listings across this market, and on a dual-mode printer also confirm the ribbon spindles are present, since a transfer-capable printer without them can only run direct thermal.

Ribbon and media pairing

On a dual-mode printer the most common source of poor output is running the wrong combination, so it is worth getting right once.

Direct thermal needs thermally coated label stock. Plain uncoated labels print nothing at all. Thermal transfer needs an uncoated or coated label plus a ribbon matched to it: wax for paper labels and general indoor use, wax-resin for more abrasion, full resin for synthetics, chemicals and outdoor life.

The one rule that prevents most printhead failures is to run a ribbon at least as wide as the label. A narrower ribbon lets the head run directly on the abrasive label edge, which destroys it far faster than normal wear. See label media and ribbon selection and thermal printer maintenance.

Common questions

Can the Wasp WPL305 print without a ribbon?

Yes. It runs in both modes. In direct thermal it needs no ribbon but requires thermally coated label stock and the output fades over weeks to months. In thermal transfer it uses a ribbon and the output lasts years, which is what asset tags and long-stored labels need.

Do I need Wasp software to use this printer?

No. It installs with a Windows driver and prints from any label design application, shipping platform or inventory system. Wasp bundles these printers with their own software, which is why many businesses have one, but the hardware is not locked to it.

Why does it have a parallel port?

Can several people share this printer over the network?

Not directly, since the interfaces are USB, serial and parallel rather than Ethernet. You can share it from a host PC, but that PC must stay on. For genuine multi-user printing, specify an Ethernet-capable printer instead.

What should I check on a refurbished dual-mode printer?

Printhead condition, platen roller wear, and specifically that the ribbon spindles are present. A transfer-capable printer missing its ribbon spindles can only run direct thermal, and that is easy to miss until the first ribbon arrives.
