Zebra ZT230 vs ZT231: What Changed and Which to Buy
If you are choosing between the Zebra ZT230 and the ZT231 today, buy the ZT231. The decision is not close, and it is not really about speed or memory. It is about connectivity. The ZT230 is recorded here with USB 2.0 and RS-232 Serial only. The ZT231 adds 10/100 Ethernet, a USB Host port and Bluetooth Low Energy as standard, which is the difference between a printer that belongs to one workstation and a printer that belongs to the site.
The exception is if you already own a working ZT230. If it prints your formats, sits on a bench with a cable to one PC, and has never needed to be on the network, there is no upgrade argument here worth acting on. Keep it, run it, and replace it when it fails or when a requirement changes. Everything below explains where the two machines actually diverge, in the order those differences change the decision.
Connectivity: the line that decides it
Both printers are 4 inch thermal transfer industrial units built around the same media handling envelope. On the bench they look like close relatives. The connector panel is where they part company.
The ZT230 configurations we hold are supplied with USB 2.0 and RS-232 Serial. Both are point-to-point interfaces. A USB cable ties the printer to the machine it is plugged into, and a serial cable does the same thing more slowly. If a second bench needs to print, someone shares the printer through the host PC, and that host now has to be switched on, logged in and awake for the printer to work. If the host is replaced, the printer setup is rebuilt.
The ZT231 we hold is supplied with USB 2.0, RS-232 Serial, 10/100 Ethernet, a USB Host port and Bluetooth Low Energy. Ethernet is the one that matters most. With a network address the printer is an independent device: several workstations queue to it directly, a warehouse management system or ERP can address it by name or address without a host PC in the path, and replacing the computer on the bench does not touch the printer at all. The USB Host port is a smaller feature that quietly saves time. It accepts a USB stick, which means firmware files, stored label formats, fonts and configuration can be loaded at the printer without a host connection at all. On a shop floor where the printer is not near a desk, that is the difference between a five minute job and an afternoon.
Bluetooth Low Energy is used mainly for configuration and status from a phone or tablet rather than as a printing path. It is useful for setup and for reading printer state when the unit is in an awkward position, and it is not a substitute for Ethernet on a production machine.
There is one practical warning that applies to every networked label printer, not just this one. Give it a static address or a DHCP reservation at install and record which bench it serves. A printer that quietly changes address after a power cut stops receiving jobs and presents exactly like a hardware fault, and a great deal of time gets spent on the printer before anyone checks the address.

On paper this is the headline difference. The ZT230 runs up to 6 in/sec (152 mm/s). The ZT231 runs up to 12 in/sec (305 mm/s) at 203 dpi. That is a straight doubling of the rated throughput, and it is worth being honest about what it does and does not buy you.
On a bench printing a few hundred labels a day, in ones and twos as orders are picked or items are received, you will notice nothing. The time is spent waiting for the operator, the scan, the pick and the application. The printer is idle most of the shift, and a printer that is idle faster is still idle. Doubling rated speed changes nothing about that workflow.
On a production line clearing a queue, it halves the print time. Batch runs, print and apply sequences, end of shift label runs, a despatch surge where several hundred labels are released at once: in every one of those cases the printer is the constraint and the extra speed comes straight off the clock. The test is simple. Watch a busy period and ask whether anybody is standing waiting for the printer. If they are, speed is worth paying for. If they are not, treat the speed difference as a specification line and buy on connectivity instead.
There is a second point that gets missed. Rated top speed is the ceiling, not the operating point. Print quality on many media and ribbon combinations falls off before the printer reaches its maximum, and the usable speed is set by the stock, the ribbon, the darkness setting and the complexity of the label. A machine rated at 12 in/sec gives you headroom to run comfortably at a speed the media actually supports. Memory: what a label printer stores, and who notices
The ZT230 carries 128MB Flash and 128MB RAM. The ZT231 carries 256MB Flash and 256MB SDRAM. Both figures double, and the reason this matters is not obvious unless you know what a label printer uses memory for.
Flash is the non-volatile storage on the printer. It holds the firmware, and it holds the objects you have deliberately downloaded to the printer and want to keep there: stored label formats, fonts and graphics such as logos, certification marks and fixed artwork. The point of storing these on the printer is that the host then calls a format by name and sends only the variable data, rather than transmitting the whole label design with every single job. On a serial link that is the difference between a usable system and an unusable one, and even on Ethernet it reduces traffic and speeds up the first label out.
RAM or SDRAM is the working memory. It holds the label image while it is being built, buffers incoming data and gives the firmware room to work. Complex labels with large graphics, many fields, rotated text or high dot counts consume more of it.
So who actually notices the doubling? Sites with a large library of stored formats, sites that keep multiple fonts resident, and sites printing labels with heavy graphics. If you have a handful of simple formats and a plain text label, 128MB is not a constraint and 256MB will not change anything you can measure. If you are consolidating several label templates onto one printer, or your labels carry substantial artwork, the extra headroom is real. It also leaves more room for firmware, which matters over the life of the unit.
EPL2: the migration feature that quietly decides some cases

ZPL is Zebra Programming Language, the command language the printer understands. Almost everything modern emits ZPL or ZPL II. EPL is the older Zebra desktop language, and it survives in the field far longer than most people expect because it is buried inside working systems that nobody has had a reason to touch: an old warehouse application, a legacy ERP label module, a piece of bespoke integration written a long time ago by someone who has since left.
This is a binary problem, not a gradual one. If a host system on your site still emits EPL, a printer that speaks only ZPL will not print from it. Your options then are to re-author every affected label format, to put a conversion layer in the middle, or to change the host system. All three are projects with a budget and a test cycle attached. A printer that accepts EPL2 turns that project into a cable swap.
The practical step before you order is to find out what your hosts actually send. If everything on site is ZPL, this line is irrelevant to you. If anything at all is still emitting EPL, or you are not certain, the ZT231 removes the risk entirely and the ZT230 does not.
Resolution: where the two differ in what we hold
We hold the ZT230 in both 203 dpi and 300 dpi builds. The ZT231 build we hold is 203 dpi.
For most industrial label work 203 dpi is the correct choice. Carrier labels, pallet labels, large linear barcodes, location and bin labels and standard product labels all print and scan perfectly at 203 dpi, and they print faster there. Resolution earns its place when information density is high: small point text, dense 2D codes such as Data Matrix on a small label, or fine linear barcodes with a narrow bar width close to the limit of what 203 dpi can place accurately.
If you need 300 dpi in this class, do not assume the configuration is available in the family you prefer. What did not change, and why that is the reassuring part
A comparison article can make two machines sound further apart than they are. The compatibility side is worth stating plainly, because it is what makes a ZT230 to ZT231 move low risk.
Both are thermal transfer, so the print chemistry is the same and the ribbon and media pairing you already use carries over. Both have a maximum print width of 4.09 inches (104 mm), so your widest existing label still fits. Both take media from 0.75 inches to 4.50 inches wide, so the whole range of stock you already buy runs on either machine. Both speak ZPL and ZPL II, so every format you have authored in ZPL prints on either.
In practice that means a ZT230 to ZT231 move does not touch your label formats and does not touch your media. You are not re-authoring artwork, you are not re-qualifying stock, and you are not renegotiating consumables. You are changing the machine and keeping everything around it. That is a very different proposition from a cross-brand change, where format, media path and command language can all shift at once.
The one thing to re-check on any move is calibration. A new unit needs its media sensor set up and its print position verified against a real label rather than assumed, and this takes a few minutes rather than a few hours. Ribbon capacity, and why operators care more than buyers do
The ZT230 is recorded as taking a ribbon roll up to 1476 ft (450 m) on a 1 inch core. That is a specification line that buyers skim and operators feel every shift.
Thermal transfer printing consumes ribbon in step with media. Every ribbon change stops the printer, and if the printer is on a line, it stops the line. The changeover itself is short, but the interruption is not: someone has to notice, fetch the right ribbon, open the machine, thread it, close up and restart the job, and on a busy floor that sequence carries its own delay before it even begins. A longer ribbon roll means fewer of those events per shift for the same output.
The corollary is a stocking discipline. Long rolls only help if the right ribbon is on the shelf when the machine calls for one, and the commonest cause of an unplanned stop is not ribbon length but the wrong ribbon or none at all. Match ribbon chemistry to the label stock deliberately rather than by habit, because a mismatch shows up as poor adhesion of the print, smudging or premature head wear rather than as an obvious failure. Where this pair sits in the wider range
The ZT230 and ZT231 are mid-range 4 inch industrial machines. It helps to know what sits beside and above them before you settle.
Above them are the ZT410 and ZT411, which run up to 14 in/sec at 203 dpi and carry 512MB Flash with 256MB RAM. That is a heavier class in throughput and in storage, and the case for it is a genuinely high volume line or a site running a large resident format and font library. Should you replace a working ZT230?
No, not on age alone. This is the honest position and it is worth stating clearly because the rest of this article reads like an argument for the newer machine.
If your ZT230 prints your formats correctly, is fed by a host it can reach over USB or serial, and has never needed to be on the network, it is doing its job. Replacing working hardware because a newer model exists converts a stable asset into an installation project with a commissioning risk attached. Replace on risk rather than age: when the machine starts failing, when a printhead replacement stops being economic against the remaining life of the unit, when the bench becomes critical enough that downtime costs more than a spare, or when a requirement changes and the printer cannot meet it. The requirements that do justify moving are specific. The printer has to be shared between benches or addressed directly by a warehouse system, which means Ethernet. Something on site still emits EPL, which means EPL2. The printer is the bottleneck during a real production peak, which means speed. Any one of those is a reason. None of them is satisfied by the fact that a newer model number exists.
If you are buying now rather than replacing, the calculus is different again. A new purchase carries no sunk cost, so there is no reason to specify the narrower interface set. Buy the ZT231.
