Resolution is the one specification that genuinely separates label printers, and it is also the one people buy without working out whether they need it. Most of the market sits at 203 dpi, which is entirely adequate for a carrier label. The moment a label gets smaller and the information on it gets denser, 203 dpi starts to fail in ways that look like a scanner problem rather than a printing problem.

The TSC TTP-345 is a 4-inch thermal transfer label printer that prints at 300 dpi, supplied here as part 99-065A100-00LF00 in new condition. It sits in the TTP-345 family and is sold as an industrial label printer. What makes it worth a look is the combination: 300 dpi and thermal transfer, without the price that combination usually carries. What does 300 dpi actually buy you?

It buys you the ability to put more information into less space and still have it read. Print resolution is the number of heating elements across the printhead per inch. At 203 dpi there are roughly eight elements per millimetre; at 300 dpi there are about twelve. That difference does three specific, useful things.

Small text stays readable. Below roughly 6 point, character strokes at 203 dpi start falling between elements, and the letterforms break up into something that is technically present but practically unreadable. At 300 dpi the same text holds its shape. That matters for part descriptions, asset detail, instruction text and anything where either regulation or plain practicality forces a lot of words onto a small label.

2D codes hold their cell grid at small sizes. A Data Matrix or a QR code is a grid of square cells, and a scanner needs each cell rendered to a consistent size. At 203 dpi a small 2D code has very few printer dots per cell, so rounding error distorts the grid and read rates drop. At 300 dpi there are enough dots per cell that the code stays square and scans first time. If you are marking small items with 2D codes, this is not a refinement, it is the difference between a label that works and one that gets rescanned by hand.

Fine linear barcodes keep their narrow bar width. A linear symbol printed at a narrow bar width of around 5 mil is at the edge of what 203 dpi can place accurately. At 300 dpi the same symbol gets more dots per bar, so the width ratio between narrow and wide elements stays inside tolerance and the symbol grades better. What 300 dpi does not buy you is a better shipping label. A 4-inch carrier label with a large linear barcode and a legible address block scans identically at 203 dpi, and it prints faster there because the printer has fewer dots to place per inch of media. If your entire workload is large-format despatch labels, resolution is not the upgrade that will help you; throughput and media handling are. Resolution earns its place when information density is high, not as a general improvement to everything you print.

Two rows there say the same thing, and they say it deliberately. A 300 dpi head turns media quality into a cost decision

The trade-off nobody mentions when selling resolution is that a finer printhead is less forgiving of the label stock you feed it. A 203 dpi head has larger elements and effectively averages over small irregularities in the label surface and the coating. A 300 dpi head has smaller elements placed closer together, and it reproduces those irregularities instead of smoothing them out.

The practical consequence is counter-intuitive and catches people out regularly: an operation moves from a 203 dpi printer to a 300 dpi printer, keeps buying the same cheap stock, and print quality gets worse rather than better. Output looks mottled, edges look ragged, and the obvious conclusion is that the new printer is faulty. It usually is not. The stock that was acceptable at the coarser resolution is no longer acceptable at the finer one.

That converts media from a preference into a line in the budget. If you specify a 300 dpi printer, you are also specifying a grade of label and ribbon that can support it, and you should price both together rather than buying the printer and then hunting for the cheapest consumable. The related error is reaching for the darkness setting. When output looks light, raising darkness is the first thing most people try and the last thing that actually helps. Faint or patchy print is nearly always media, ribbon match, platen pressure or a dirty printhead, roughly in that order. Turning darkness up burns elements harder, shortens head life and does not correct any of those four causes. Thermal transfer only: every label costs a ribbon

This unit is recorded as thermal transfer, and that means there is no direct thermal fallback on it. It is worth being blunt about what that implies for running cost and for stock, because it is a genuine constraint and not a detail.

Thermal transfer prints by melting pigment or resin from a ribbon onto the label. Direct thermal prints by heating a chemically coated label so it darkens on its own, with no ribbon involved. A printer that supports both lets you choose per job. A thermal transfer only printer does not. Every label you print consumes ribbon as well as label stock, so your consumable cost per label is higher and you carry two things in inventory instead of one.

There is a second consequence that bites harder in practice. You cannot run cheap direct thermal stock through this printer and get a usable label, because there is no direct thermal mode to engage. If some of your workload is high-volume, short-life labelling on inexpensive thermal paper, this machine cannot do that part of the job, and you will need either a second printer or a different model. There is also a ribbon handling learning curve that direct thermal users have never had to deal with: loading, tension, ribbon width against label width, and matching ribbon type to the label surface. None of it is difficult, but it is extra setup per media change, and it is where most new thermal transfer users lose their first hour.

Where thermal transfer is the right answer anyway

Thermal transfer is the correct choice whenever the label has to outlive the week. That is the whole case for it, and it is a strong one.

Direct thermal output fades. Heat, sunlight, friction and some solvents all degrade it, and no setting anywhere in the printer changes that chemistry. A direct thermal label is fine for something read within days or weeks. It is not fine for anything that needs to be legible in three years. Thermal transfer output, with the right ribbon and stock combination, lasts.

Asset tags. An IT or equipment asset tag has to survive the whole service life of the asset and stay scannable at audit. That is thermal transfer work, and combined with 300 dpi it lets you fit a 2D code and a readable asset number onto a small tag that fits on a laptop lid or a network switch. Bin, rack and location labels. Warehouse location labels are scanned thousands of times, handled, knocked and exposed to whatever the building does to them. They need to last, and replacing them is disruptive because the scheme depends on them being right.

Product identification and rating plates. Anything attached to a product that goes out of the door and needs to still identify itself later.

Anything that has to last years. That is the general rule, and it is the reason to accept the ribbon cost rather than resent it. If your labels are short-life, the ribbon is pure overhead. If they are long-life, the ribbon is the point.

About the recorded weight, plainly

The recorded weight for this unit is 6.2 lbs, and that is light for anything described as industrial. We are not going to explain that away, because we do not hold the detail that would let us explain it honestly.

Here is our position. In our experience weight is a reasonable proxy for frame construction and sustained duty in label printers. Heavier machines generally mean a metal frame, a more substantial media path and mechanical components sized for continuous running. A figure of 6.2 lbs is at the light end of anything carrying the industrial description, and it sits closer to desktop territory than to the heavy industrial units people picture when they read that word.

That is not the same as saying the machine is not what it claims. It is saying that we hold a recorded figure, the figure is on the light side, and the sensible response is to ask rather than to assume in either direction. How to specify this printer properly

Specify it by confirming the two things we do not hold on record, because both of them can stop a printer working on day one.

The programming language. We do not hold a recorded command language for this part, and that matters a great deal if you are replacing a printer in an existing installation. Most operations that have been printing labels for any length of time have stored label formats: templates held in a warehouse system, an ERP, a label design package or a print server, written for the command language the old printer spoke. Drop in a printer that speaks a different language and those formats do not print. What you get is blank labels, garbled output or nothing at all, and it looks like a hardware fault when it is a language mismatch.

If you are starting from scratch and designing labels in a modern label package with a driver, this matters much less, because the package handles the translation. The rule is simple: the more of your labelling is already automated, the more important this confirmation is.

Running cost over the life of the printer

The purchase is the smallest number in the calculation. Consumables and the printhead are where the money actually goes, and a 300 dpi thermal transfer printer moves both of those upwards compared with a 203 dpi direct thermal one.

The printhead is a consumable, rated in length of media printed rather than in years, and a 300 dpi head carries more elements across the same 4 inches, which makes it a more expensive part. It wears on the same schedule as any other: length of media, abrasiveness of the stock, and darkness setting. Choosing a smoother label stock and running the lowest darkness that produces a good barcode is the single most effective thing you can do to extend head life. When a head does fail, the symptom is consistent and easy to recognise: a thin unprinted line running down the length of every label, in the same place every time. The platen roller is the part that gets blamed least and causes most. It is the rubber roller that drives the media past the head, and when it hardens, develops flat spots or picks up adhesive, you get tracking drift and inconsistent darkness. That is misread as a printhead fault more often than any other failure in thermal printing.
